come all ye artists who crave the secret to artistic success behold my tidings of advice you didn't ask for: be indulgent as hell go absolutely apeshit on that canvas use 400 refs and go sicko mode on some blorbos you love until you wake up a year later w/ 100's of arts thats it thats the advice

Tbh I really encourage people to take an art history class at some point in your life bc it truly helps put into perspective that art can (and is, has been, will continue to) be anything that moves us little human critters to feel or act or change or grow. The only rule is that there are none.

Your style is a combo of what you love, what feels good to make, and what inspires you - it will always overlap with your inspirations. This might worry you! HOWEVER... What makes your art stand out is the key piece - your VOICE. This is how you connect to others - This is what GRIPS people.

To be as clear as possible about this; This isn't about artists choosing deliberately to make weirder art knowing that it won't be profitable. This is about others encouraging artists to just "make your weird art!" in the face of overwhelming pressure to conform just so they can afford to live.

Another #arttip for today; This one doesn't have any statistical backing or anything like that, but is something I've noticed on my own from experience and observation. If you post a WIP - do *not* post the fully finished piece as a quoted post. You will likely nerf the finished pieces numbers!

Fwiw, If you don't understand how... Tracing is harmless when done for study/learning! It is, in fact, an excellent way to train your hands/eyes to understand the muscle memory needed to draw - and in turn understand - organic shapes. There is no magic shortcut! We all wish there was! Alas!

Oh! This is also how you avoid total crashing burnout, I've found. At least if the issue is the pressure TO create. You have to keep the door open. You have to make little things like this, so you can use those little things like a doorstopper until you feel strong enough to open the door again.

Made a big rant on my art tumblr about being willing as an artist to try new things and make the jump from the burning buildings that are twitter and yes, even tumblr I think many of us are exhausted from the jumping ship and rebuilding over and over and over but, to be frank, that will never stop.

I literally cannot endorse this enough!!! This is also exactly why people will tell you to become obsessed with your ocs/a show/etc - bc it encourages and drives you to draw A WHOLE DAMN LOT, and often you do not have the LUXURY of spending more time. YOUR BRAIN WANTS BLORBO CONTENT *NOW*!!!

OH YEAH; #Art tip for y'all - If you use a symmetry ruler set to 2, enable snapping on your brushes, and treat half of your canvas like the Full Canvas - you can draw and see the flipped version of your art as you go >:] You can make your edits directly on the reflected version too!
