Notes: - This song is admittedly imperfect, but I like to roll it around in my head, imagine ways it could have been improved. (Mostly: get an actual professional singer for chorus guest vocals) - Fridge brilliance on this is when you try to work out the verse 1 rhyme scheme. Like a rap long take.

What I'm listening to today: "Show Me What You Got", Busta Rhymes Busta Rhymes sampling my favorite Stereolab song¹. J Dilla beat. Kinda archetypical for Busta: Great production, incredible rap flow, overlong chorus drags it down www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2Q0... ¹ Come And Play In The Milky Night

Note—One interesting effect making this Sound The Way it does is not only is this pre-Tim Alexander, it's pre-ANY DRUMMER, it's literally Claypool, LaLonde and a LinnDrum. It's interesting to think that the specific rhythms a drum machine forces could change the entire genre of this pair toward funk

What I listened to today: "Primate", Primus Primus is known for a Specific Sound, so it's SUPER interesting to listen to this early demo, where the sound isn't…quite…what it became. Intense funk vibes, just a touch of prog, and Claypool does Voices but not The Voice www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxR8...

What I listened to today: "Three Views Of A Secret", Daisuke Kawai and KALTA A man I am assured is the greatest organ player in Japan, covering a Jaco Pastorius jazz piece with a drummer who seems to be picking up psychic transmissions from another galaxy. Exuberant www.youtube.com/watch?v=6….

What I'm listening to today: "Falling In Love", Surface This 1983 track is a wonderful-feeling midpoint between the last days of disco and 80s pop, with this laid-back, unhurried vibe. I want to gush about each little production choice, every sound feels crafted. www.youtube.com/watch?v=N….

Notes: - The flute shredding is Florian Schneider; at the time it was his primary instrument - If this sounds like Can it's because they used the same producer - "First album" is glossing over live experiments working toward the electronic sound; "Tone Float"; and multiple early personnel changes

What I listened to today: "Kraftwerk" Did you know before Kraftwerk standardized on the genre-defining all-electronics sound you know them for, they were a prog-music jam band? And they were *really good* at it? Check out their first album, it's not what you expect: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJka...

What I'm listening to today: "Teletext Rhythms" This musician is writing a music production app for Nintendo 3DS homebrew, splitting the difference between a tracker and an MPC. Here's a 20-minute live set (in the sense a DJ set is live) with Noise Commander. "EDM". www.youtube.com/watch?v=B….

If this interests you, after making this video Reid dropped an hourlong documentary video about the Buchla TouchƩ. I haven't watched it yet. Questions I assume it answers: How similar is this to the Buchla 400? What happened to the other three units, besides the one in the museum in Vancouver?

When I say "hyper-rare" what I mean is "they made four of these. Ever". They invented a programming language, a Forth derivative, just for it— this was one of the earliest digitally-controlled synths, so I guess they thought in the future every synth would have a Forth backend for digital "rewiring"

What I'm listening to today: "Sarah Belle Reid plays the Buchla TouchĆ©" This is something really special—a hyper-rare 1978 synth that lets you fully reprogram it to act like something other than "a piano". Reid hacks it to make something… otherworldly, indescribable www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Vb8...

What I'm listening to today: "Kaleidoscope", substan Lovely, understated piece of instrumental electronic pop made entirely on the Digitone, Elektron's FM groovebox. The youtube title claims it is "downbeat psybient". Okay. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l…. I really like the progression on this.

What I'm listening to today: "Singularity 157", Echovocation Watch carefully at the bottom and you'll see this whole thing is a long performance on a kalimba (simplified Zimbabwean finger harp), fed into a modular chain that filters it into giant echoey aftershocks. www.youtube.com/watch?v=a….

What I'm listening to today: "TD_B4", Sun of a Pitch I imagine like, a cat doing a big yawn and stretchy, but in music form. Seductive illogic, hum and hiss, unfolding FM crystal structures, a big spaghetti desk panel of modular synths making big spaghetti sounds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=d….

What I'm listening to today: "Scorn" Portishead is one of my fav bands ever and probably my fav track of theirs is "Scorn", a relatively obscure remix that plays for like fifteen seconds in "The Craft". I would describe this track as "Glory Box" turned inside out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=i….

I really want to stress the extent to which, in 1992, *no one accepted the idea O'Connor did this for a reason*. Any reason! She was generally assumed to be "crazy". The line is "well in 1992, no one knew". Yet somehow, at the time all us nine-year-olds knew "jokes" about what happened to altar boys

What I'm listening to today: "War" Sinead O'Connor covering Bob Marley, stripped down, sharpened, into something like a weapon. This ran live on TV and all anyone talked about was the career-ending final seconds. No one understood why she did it. Child abuse? Absurd www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZINQ...
