A worthy project might be to compile every biblical admonition to welcome the stranger and just continuously read them out with a bullhorn in front of ICE facilities ⚓️

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.

(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

nor will he now enter a league with us upon any other terms than those proposed by the king of Ammon to the men of Jabeshgilead, that he may thrust out our right eyes, for he will deprive us of holy Scripture, the Gospel of our salvation & of all that hope we have in Christ Jesus." - John Jewell ⚓️

"As for us, we have not forsaken the Pope for any human pleasure or wordly profit, and we wish passionately, he would behave himself so, that there should be no need of a departure from him: but so it was, except we left him, there was no coming to Christ; 🕯

The cynicism of the billionaire venture capitalist stands in deep contrast to the true values of Jesus.

Nearing the end of John Jewell's An Apology for the Church of England. I'll admit he is starting to lose me with all his pro monarchy having charge of the Church stuff. This is what makes me glad I'm an american episcopalian. Full offense but I dont care about the opinions of kings or princes. ⚓️

I find it pretty common. We "solved" it and saved space by having a line at the start of the leaflet saying "⚓ indicates to stand as able" and having that be on every spot for standing, ie ⚓ Hymn 123, ⚓ Opening Acclamation, etc. Only other direction is if we include something about sit or kneel

I posted in response to this earlier that I really appreciate it when churches spell things out reliably. E.g.: WNC's practice on this has evolved and they've reached a state that, imo, manages to be instructive + welcoming w/o being obtrusive. Last Sun's bulletin: cathedral.org/wp-content/u... ⚓

"There are two classes of people who need frequent communion: the imperfect, that they may learn to be perfect; the strong, that they may not lose strength; the weak, that they may become strong; the sick, in order to be healed; the healthy, that they may not become sick." - St Francis de Sales 🕯

Highkey clergy should be protesting in clericals and getting on the front line, accepting the strong likelyhood of experiencing violence. People still hold a general reverence or respect for clergy people, and this stuff shocks people into rightful outrage and necessary action. ⚓️

This is not Belarus. This is not Venezuela. This is our country. A masked ICE agent sprayed David Black, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, directly in the face during protests outside the ICE processing facility in Broadview, Illinois. Above quote from the Rev. Chas Marks. ⚓

Such a privilege to be asked to contribute notes on Sunday’s readings for this wonderful project. You can read my reflections on idolatry and ingratitude here: “The wounds of our world are the very wounds of Jesus to us. We love him only as much as we love our neighbours in creation.” ⚓

Is it normal that the Sunday bulletins indicate when to stand and when to sit approximately 75% of the time while the remaining 25% of the time you just have to follow what everyone else does? Is it a test? A tradition? A secret? Or should I suggest consistency while I’m proof reading them? ⚓️
