Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BestOfJuly. I continue to be sidelined by a broken ankle, so here's a brand new #IndigoBunting from July of 2025. It's clearly thinking, "Why does no one ever feed me now?" #birds #photography #BirdPhotography #wildlife #WildlifePhotography #nature #NaturePhotography
A young Indigo Bunting, a dun-coloured bird with maybe some very faint hints of blue, clings to a dangling branch. Behind it is a blurred-out tree trunk.

Been wanting to do a concert sketch for the longest time… last Tuesday we spontaneously attended an organ concert at Notre Dame de Paris, … and what can I say, it was INTENSE! In the bestest of ways. Here’s my ink sketch ♥️ 🎶 . #urbansketch #concertsketch

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
Panel one: a climber reaches the top of a towering cliff. There, among the clouds, a serene figure with a long beard, wearing a robe, sits crosslegged on the bare rock. He is "The Great Wise One of the Mountain"

Panels two, three and four: sitting serenely crosslegged on successively lower clifftops we see the Assistant Wise One of the Mountain, The Post-Doc Research Fellow of the Mountain and a group of PhD Students of the Mountain

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #OverTheRainbow, any bird looking skyward, and the alt theme is #HedgingYourBets, any bird in a hedge or bush. Here is a #GreatBlueHeron in a bush, looking skyward. Herons are weird. #birds #photography #BirdPhotography #herons #wildlife #WildlifePhotography #nature
A Great Blue Heron pokes its head out from the middle of a bush and gazes at the heavens. Why? Who knows what goes on in that dinosaur brain?

I went to look for other critters while the cicada slowly emerged and from across the park I heard all of them start cheering like the main act came onto the stage. It was so nice 😭

I was so toast earlier today and was like “oh god I have to run a moth night how am I going to muster the energy”, but then the bats put on a show to rival Shamu, and an emerging cicada dazzled the crowd and I was like oh yeah that’s why I do this.

Don't allow anyone to tell you that a day spent exploring used bookstores, greenhouses, libraries, cafés, and bakeries "doesn't classify" as self-care.

We only rate dogs. This is a bed bug. She's very cute, and we actually wouldn't mind an infestation of this particular bed bug. But please only send dogs. Thank you... 12/10 (TT: lekik25)

One glaze at a time... I love this stage of a painting. The values are already in place, but layer by layer, the underpainting slowly gives way to color, A little sneak peek from the tutorial book I've been working on this year. ✨ #FantasyArt #PaintingProcess #ArtTutorial

Grandiloquent Word of the Day

Piobaireachd [PEE-brok] (n.) - The classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe. A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic (pipe playing, pipe music)
A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme for the word “Piobaireachd,” defined as “The classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe.” At right, a black-and-white Victorian-style illustration shows a bearded Scottish bagpiper in tartan and a feathered cap. The example sentence reads: “Angus drew the ire of his daughter’s neighborhood HOA by observing the ‘Royal Morning Tradition’—a fifteen-minute piobaireachd commencing punctually at nine o’clock Scottish time, which, unfortunately for the residents of Mapledunk Estates, was four in the morning.”

Medusa but her hair is an anaconda
Medusa with a single anaconda for hair. She wears a grey chiton and stubbornly strides to the left, dragging the heavy snake, which trails sullenly along behind
Medusa with a single anaconda for hair. It is completely coiled around her, leaving only her angry yellow eyes visible, and a single hand lifted to flip off the world
Medusa with a single anaconda for hair. She wears a grey towel and is scrubbing the snake. A bar of soap sits in a small puddle off to the left
Medusa with a single anaconda for hair. She sits, drumming her fingers impatiently, while in the background the anaconda digests some large prey
