Do I skipped folinic acid today, but also took a Benadryl. I feel better than I have all week. I made grilled cheese! Did some parenting. And it’s 9pm and I’m still awake! Today is significantly better than yesterday. Gonna celebrate by reading a book and 🤞 I sleep at a human time!

Much like tech bros get everything from sci-fi books wrong, conservatives consistently do not listen to the lyrics of the songs they like to play. Fortunate Son. Born in the USA. Whew. This is yikes.

I did not edit this, this is the actual parade with the actual music being played. CINEMATIC

Former DC-er here, brainstorming crowd comps. Enormous draws (Obama’s 2nd inaugural, that Stewart-Colbert rally, any July 4th) & even big crowds (Nat Book Fest, my SIL’s GW grad, some protests) are irrelevant. This is like that one time they showed Gentlemen Prefer Blondes outside on a weeknight.

I wrote a brief piece on Maurice Gee’s Under the Mountain for The Spinoff. RIP you legend of children’s fiction. thespinoff.co.nz/books/29….
Under the Mountain by Maurice Gee
Under the Mountain is a foundational text in the King family. In 1980, my brother Jonathan and I lived in Auckland, side-eying volcanoes, and we auditioned (unsuccessfully) for the parts of Rachel and Theo in the iconic TV series. My brother went on to direct the 2009 film version. Gee, according to his biography by Rachel Barrowman, wanted to write for his own children, but also he’d heard that “children’s book as a rule sold better than adult ones”, so he turned to, of all books, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen for inspiration. It really holds up to an adult reading. Gee’s language is typically elegant and never dumbed down for its audience, and because he thought victory was often scored too easily by child heroes, he kills off cousin Ricky at the end, “floating face down in a sea as black as oil.” And then Lake Pupuke erupts causing death and destruction… it is dark. He may have regretted frightening the bejeesus out of a generation.

Hiding from Interesting Fun Book Event because of essentially a year-long overwhelm. Which sucks. BUT. I have this unbelievable cat who shows up at 2am to hug me and hold my hand AND decisively trap both current projects so I have to go to bed.
Her Highness the cat embracing my waist with her whole self, while holding my hand with her paw while also grooming my fingers
Her Highness the cat, applying herself on top of two open sketchbooks so I'll just go to bed already

I finished the Lego Sherlock Holmes Book Nook today. I'm going to give Moriarty a new, less stubbly face and Irene's umbrella and call him Mycroft. Also, poor Watson, he's the only one who doesn't get a cape.
The Lego Sherlock Holmes Book Nook set expanded with the mini figures of Watson, Holmes, Moriarty, Irene and Paige standing in front.

This is why I volunteer with Reading Partners. This is why I fight book bans. Authoritarians and fascists are terrified of educated people. People who know about history. People who have been taught critical thinking skills. People who READ. @authorsabb.bsky.social #nokings #resist

Weingarten: Their attacks on public education are relentless and why? Because they fear knowledge. Why do they fear teachers? They fear us because we teach critical thinking… their brand of greed, power, and privilege cannot survive in a democracy of diverse educated citizens

Over on the other place, the US Dept of Defence has put Russian flags on its flag day post.
Sybertooth Books observes: "US Department of Defence puts Russian flags on its 'Flag Day' poster.
Appropriate, given that their commander in chief and his cabinet are lobbyists for Russia." The US Dept of Defence post natters about freedom freedom rah rah rah and has segment of an American and below the words "Flag Day" the bars of a Russian flag, white-blue-red, three stars, then another Russian flag. (Americans still haven't caught on to "defence" noun and "defense" verb.)
