Almost a month and a half since that damn bastard’d kidnapped her. Summer break’d already come and gone, the damn Georgia late summer heat and humidity as shitty as ever. As expected, hadn’t really seen her much since she’d survived that day. Well. Guess it’d be better said as “remembered” for me and Kyle, but it’d been kinda obvious even without us having lived it once: there’s no way Ms. Rae’d take Kylie going missing well, and she ain’t exactly a woman that’d ever handled a lack of control with grace.

No one at school realized one of the “missing people” had been me, not even when I’d jumped at some freshman bumping into me. None of the investigation details about the kidnapping were public compared, unlike the cases of people missing in the forest back when all this started. While I preferred them not to know — was nice to not feel pity from everyone around me like had so often been the case since Azusa had kidnapped me — , I struggled to maintain the energy they had, that I once had.

“Did you hear? It happened again,” a girl beside me said to her friend, hushed whispers. “Another person went missing. No trace of their body. Cops can’t find anything.”

I pulled my phone out, scrolling through my social media feed. Everyone kept talking about this — probably was just people running away; it wasn’t like there was much else to talk about in this city. Usually, we imported our drama fresh from Savannah, but people started going “missing” over a month ago, right as we came back from holiday break. And it’s all I’d heard about since then, from Dani, from my classmates.

It didn’t affect me. I wasn’t stupid enough to roam outside at random hours, go down dark alleyways with strangers following me. I’d never even been to detention, though knew more about it than I probably should thanks to Jordan being a frequent visitor. Speaking of, I picked my duffel bag up as I saw him walk out the front doors of the school, searching for me in the spot I normally stood. - Kylie

Kylie’d always been *exceptional*. Top of the class, all honors. Excelled at everything. Had a loving mother who cared too much as her worst fault, had lived in the same house the whole time I’d known her, maybe even her whole life. I knew the way to her house better than the past four places I’d lived combined.

For not the first time, I wondered why someone that so naturally lit up a room’s around someone like me. That she’s more special than we’d known, that she could use magic and was learning at the rate that it consumed so much of her time, wasn’t really that surprising; she’d always had eyes on her, and I preferred it that way; if people focused on her, then I could be in the background. Darby is a prime example of a person w/ a relatively subtle disability who never got DXed & is in denial. “I have trouble w/ basic things like climbing stairs and using a pencil, and also (this entire paragraph)… nothing Wrong w/ me, though! Just some quirks 🙂” #WritingCommunity #AmWriting ♿️♾️📚

None of the other staff or customers noticed anything was wrong. Darby had gotten good at hiding her pain. What would be the point of flinching from every ache in her muscles, or each time a spot on her body burned as if acid were dripping on it? She was so used to these sensations that they barely registered as pain anymore. And with so much practice, it wasn't too difficult to conceal more severe discomfort.

Though they couldn’t make out what the person on the other end was saying, Inarora could sense Grandpa’s frustration grow more. His aura flickered like flames Inarora’s breath caught in their throat. All hope was sucked out of them and it left them with a hollowness in their heart. Oh no…that isn’t a good sign. Grandpa reached down and stroked Inarora’s hair.
