Last day of #InverteFest! It always seems to fly by so fast. Seems like as good a time as ever to post the first in a new illustration series I've been preparing for a few months now- an invertebrate major arcana! Looking forward to sharing more of these as time goes by!

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 January theme: Bugs Among Us Week 1: Firebrat! (Thermobia Domestica) A little insect that snuggles into warm cozy spaces and munches on leaf litter, cereals, and book bindings. They have a distinctive long three tail-like appendages!
A drawing for #InsertAnInvert2024 featuring the Firebrat.

The cream-colored animal with brown splotch patterns down its back is drawn with a splash of orange/red behind it, playing off the fire in its name. The significant 3 tails take up much of the space as they flair out in different directions.

The border of the drawing is decorated in a simple matching orange band, with the hashtag along the top, and the animal's name on the bottom. This framing will be standard for the rest of the year's themed drawings.

πŸ‘€ πŸͺ± πŸͺ° After so many months, my shop is reopening later this January! Been working on reorganizing and prepping a new storefront- I'll update with the official opening date soon!
A product photo showing a cream vinyl sticker sheet with five larger invertebrate stickers and three smaller stickers. The sticker sheet is laid out on a polka-dot paper background.

The larger stickers are of a mole cricket, a tailless whip scorpion, a wheelbug, a long tailed ichneumon wasp, and pink dragon millipede. The smaller stickers are of a grub, a rubber duck isopod, and a fly.
A product photo showing four acrylic charms laid out on a dark material. Each charm is attached to a metal keyring and have a unique design each- an earwig on a yellow background, a grub on a red background, a centipede on a teal background, and an antlion on a purple background.

🐑πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 January theme: Bugs Among Us Week 2: Clown Isopods! (Armadillidium Klugii) Look at them go!
A drawing for #InsertAnInvert2024 featuring the Clown Isopod!

The background features a large blue circle with three smaller ones around it. Over the large circle backdrop are three Clown Isopods in various poses. One is curled in a ball, one is walking with its head arched upward, and one is curling away from the viewer. All three are dark colored with bright orange edges, heads and legs, and are adorned with 3 rows of white and yellow spots that go down the body from head to tail.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Week 3: Garden Symphylan! (Scutigerella Immaculata) Realizing that some body segments share a pair of legs was super cool- I'd wondered why my segment/leg counts didn't add up! I bet these are what I see when doing my potting.
A drawing of two garden symphylans drawn for #InsertAnInvert2024.

The drawing shows both symphylans as if they are moving counter-clockwise chasing eachother's tails. The right symphylan is white, translucent with just a hint of yellowing towards the tail. The left symphylan has stronger yellowing towards its back half, and orange food can be seen through the translucent body as its being digested. Behind both is a grey-blue oval background, to give them contrast from the otherwise neutral backdrop color.

A square border matching the blue-grey goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on top, and the animal name Symphylan is written on the bottom.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Bugs Among Us: Around Logs Week 4: Pauropods (Trachypauropus Britannicus) They look like delicious breadcrumbs and I am so enamored
A drawing of three pauropods drawn for #InsertAnInvert2024.

They are painted in a golden color with pale undersides. Little pointed legs can be seen from under the shell as well as the pronged antennae. The tops of their shells have a faint texture. Around the animals are decorative pink and purple stars that make their golden color pop by contrast.

A square border in matching pink goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on top, and the animal name Pauropod is written on the bottom.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships: Courtship Week 5: Hooded Tickspider (Ricinulei) Between the long feeler legs, interlocking body segments, protective cucullus hood, and cool shades of red, these guys jumped right up to some of my fav arachnids. I'm in love~
A drawing of a red hooded tickspider. It is at a diagonal to the viewer so the head and top of the body can be seen. It is red from head to toe, with the distinctive long set of second legs stretched closer to the viewer as feelers. The third pair of legs have a spoon-shape towards the end, indicating that this is a male hooded tickspider as they have specialized third legs for mating.

The background has a yellow flower shaped splash and some yellow action lines.

A square border in a matching red color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships: Eggs Week 6: Sea Spider (Pantopoda) Such funky guys! Love that the males have arms specifically for carrying their poofy egg clumps. I especially enjoy the ones that wear the eggs like little pompom bracelets.
A drawing of an orange and purple sea spider standing on its eight long gangly legs. On two thin arms coming from next to the large proboscus, the sea spider is holding several clumps of pale cream-colored eggs as it looks over them. It will carry these until they hatch. Blue bubbles are drawn around it to emulate being underwater.

A square border in matching color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships: Babies Week 7: Vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus) The way the babies pile up, they look so cute like little baby mice. Such a fun contrast against the wickedly cool adult mother!
A painting of a vinegaroon carrying a bunch of babies on her back and body. While the adult is a dark red black, the babies are very pale white/pink and obscure much of the adult’s body. The long thin tail and feelers, legs and face of the vinegaroon however escape the mass of children.

The background is a wild green zigzag that lends energy to the drawing.

A square border in matching color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships: Housing Week 8: Mud-Nest Harvester (Quindina limbata) These guys build round walled-off nests out of mud to protect eggs. Males keep the nest defended from predators, and will even adopt unattended nests of eggs they may find! What gentlemen.
A drawing of a small Mud-Nest Harvester after completing a mud nest. It’s squat purple body has dark thorny protrusions with yellow tips that border either side, with large ones rising from the top. Long thin legs hold the animal up and distinct dark pedipalps can be made out on the front that look almost like fangs.

The background is a muddy circle of brown and yellow, emulating the nests these animals build out of mud around them.

A square border in matching color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Shells: Infauna Tusk Shell (Dentaliida and Gadilida) Thinking about how such a small animal played such a significant part in human history, and still today. I'd like to try identifying some should I ever visit a beach.
A drawing of two tusk shells arranged in an overlapping x shape. The top one , a dentalium tusk shell, is a rustier hue, with darker reddish stripes of varying widths that stripe horizontally across the animal. It has a visible ridging and a polygonal shape to the shell’s opening The tip of the foot and some feelers can be seen emerging. Behind it is a Gadilida tusk shell, which is very smooth and almost white with faint grey striping.

The background is of an irregular pentagon with a yellow gradient.

A square border in matching color goes around the drawing. The hashtag is written on the upper left, and the animal name is written on the lower right.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Shells: Epifauna Oriental Lampshell (Lingula Anatina) Such pretty golds and greens!
A drawing of an oriental lampshell. It’s deep iridescent green shell points towards the viewer, showing the banding texture and high shine as well as the hair-like chaetae that line the edge of the animal’s mantle. The distinct long pedicle can be seen coming from behind the animal and looping around dramatically like a figure eight.

The background is a blue triangle overlaying a yellow-green triangle.

A drawing of a red Lined Chiton. Its soft girdle undulates, showing off the vivid reds and yellows. In the center of the mantle are eight overlapped shell segments, each patterned with a striking neon blue zigzag pattern on each shell and dark brown triangles in the center.

Behind the chiton is a background splash of bright blue circles to make the blue zigzags pop.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Worms: Long and Limbless Shipworm (Teredinidae) I've been wanting to draw one of these guys since last year, so happy to have gotten the opportunity!! I am just so enamored with their evolutionary path, it's so cool~
A drawing of an inky-colored shipworm boring through a piece of driftwood. It is looping through the wood, posed in a way to show off both the tail with its siphons, and the head that features the small two shells that have been evolutionarily adapted to dig through wood.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 Worms: Long and Limbed Giant Tube Worm (Riftia Pachyptila) I'd never have guessed their red color comes from their hemoglobin! Their whole chemical and symbiotic process is so fascinating to me.
A drawing of a cluster of giant tube worms standing upright, with their bright brachial plumes visible out the tops. They are stylized with yellows and vivid pinks and purples. Behind them is a purple/pink rectangle to make their colors pop.

πŸͺ± #InsertAnInvert2024 double feature! Short and Limbless: Green Spoonworm (Bonellia Viridis) Short and Limbed: Horseshoe Worm (Phoronis Australis)
A stylized drawing of a green spoonworm. It’s lumpy pear-shaped body has a bumpy texture, and coming from the head is a very long, dark teal proboscis multiple times its body length. The proboscis ends in a fork with two ribbon-like ends. This is used to move food towards the worm’s mouth.
A stylized drawing of a darkly colored horseshoe worm. The upper portion is visible, showing off the two spiraling parts of its lophophore lined with black cilia. Behind the animal are bright blue and pink triangles in neon.

πŸͺ± Choose your buddy πŸͺ±
a stylized minimal drawing of a hornworm caterpillar. It has cartoony white eyes with black pupils, drawn with fire coming from them and it is holding a knife. It is indeed a very angry caterpillar.
a stylized minimal drawing of a wheelbug nymph. It is drawn with large cartoony eyes and accent marks indicating surprise.
A stylized minimal drawing of a ladybug nymph. Despite the spiky appearance, it is drawn with a cartoony set of round eyes and big blushy marks. Perhaps it was given a lovely compliment.
A stylized drawing of a dragonfly nymph. It has very large cartoony eyes with small black pupils, and is drawn with its legs splayed out and a bunch of exclamation and question marks over its head.
