It used to be a thing when the new ball was due in a Test innings that the new-ball bowlers would bowl one or two overs with the old ball to get loose. That doesn’t seem to be in favour now.
Archer would benefit from it, given that it takes him a few overs to get up to top pace.

I get all the chat about Bazball but this team just isn't as good as the Australian one (especially in home conditions). We have one world class bowler - two is Stokes is up to it - and no frontline spinner. Two of our top three average under 35.
