asked to review an Early Career proposal for a US government agency and I honestly am struggling whether it is worth the time given the likelihood that some 20 year old DOGE staffer will kill the whole program.

Is Adobe stepping up on GenAI Everything? It's been a lot but now it's AI-everything with every click you make. Sure gets in the way of using the software. Yes, I know many flee Adobe CC I just find a number of the tools pretty useful.

JFC shilling for (effectively) a modern day IronEx-based CDR program is certainly a choice. Drawdown is *temporary*...all the work in the 90s was pretty clear on that. I had one of the main PIs for bio oceanography in grad school....he was adamant that Fe fertilization was not the way to go. 😬🙄

I submitted a proposal that would be funded by NOAA last week. I got really excited about possibly doing it. But will NOAA even exist? Will it fund research? I’m kind of in shock - I did scrub the word climate change in it. Ughhhh I hate this timeline.

okee so NIH sent a press release. A rare event these days. This one says --simplified-- a de-emphasis on animal models is the goal. More emphasis on computational models, tissue chips. But weren't @wyssinstitute.bsky.social 's grants just cut? The press release uses a Wyss photo. Hmmmm.

“That the Earth is varied topographically is no accident; it is intrinsic to the system to churn landscapes and seascapes, mixing geomorphic principles with enough openness that the resulting diversity never ceases from poles to equator, Paleozoic Era to the present.” —Holmes Rolston, III

Increasing areas of open water on the Yukon River near Dawson, YT and the Klondike River is mostly open, but the ice Tuesday afternoon is still holding in front of town. Last year the ice broke on April 28. Over the past 50 years the typical break-up date is May 5. #ytwx #YukonRiver #Dawson

Cubo-Ice: the real mineral name for natural Ice-VII (existing exclusively on Earth as inclusions in some diamonds). Mindat is having fun with there being no actual picture of the mineral:
Cubo-ice

Cubo-ice

Cubo-ice is better known as ice-VII. Found as inclusion in a diamond from Orapa, Botswana. Cubo-ice is structurally closely related to cuprite Cu2O.

Diamonds are scary! They can include little pockets of water that remain at ~237000x atmospheric pressure (it's about 5,000x atmospheric pressure at the bottom of the ocean) once the diamond has been erupted to the surface. The water is so highly pressurized it's Ice VII at room temperature.

Ice-VII inclusions in diamonds: Evidence for aqueous fluid in Earth’s deep mantle

The presence of ice-VII in diamond inclusions requires regions of the mantle with a free aqueous phase.

Good reference for going "we have known about volcanic arc magmatism being caused by the movement of silica-rich, aqueous fluid from the cold slab into the overlying hot mantle for decades"? Or simply for "of course aqueous fluids can exist as a free phase at mantle pressures!"
