On December 15, 1939, it was the premiere of the United Statesโ€™ highest grossing film - adjusted for inflation. Gone with the Wind was first shown on this day at Loewโ€™s Grand Theatre in Atlanta, GA โ€“ the city where author Margaret Mitchell set her story of the U.S. Civil War. #FilmSky #BookSky #OTD
Around 18,000 people came to the theater to see the stars of the movie, though Hattie McDaniel was not allowed in the theater because she was Black. The next year, for her performance in Gone with the Wind, McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Academy Award.

Amongst the trees I find Marjorie with her back to a wide trunk of a massive pine, its lowest limbs just a few feet overhead. I join her and squat beneath them and peer back towards the trail, waiting. Like Iโ€™d said before, if that feeling comes again I ainโ€™t running. Well here it was. โ€œJust like before,โ€ Marjorie said, peering around the side of the tree as I peer around the other. Thereโ€™s not a sound, not even a whisper of wind. The forest is still as it often tends to become in the dead of the night. I turn my head slowly, not being able to shake the sense of eyes on my back. I notice Marjorie doing the same. Stripes in the night, thatโ€™s what we see: tree trunks black and snow smooth and white, rolling and bending like a heavy blanket on the ground. Theyโ€™re out there. I can feel them peering back. Just like before. Before we had ran. Before we were certain we were being pursued. This time we stayed and this time we were certain we were being watched. I plop down on the couch, a huge smile on my face. Ash brings my blanket and throws it on me. "My Queen," he says with a bow and we laugh at him. But I detect a little sarcasm in his tone. "Is there anything I can get you?" I shake my head before smiling at him. "I have everything I want right here in this room," I say in English, holding his gaze. Might as well try to eradicate any doubts his mother has about our marriage with a little fake love. As he straightens up, he says, "I don't want anything else, either." He truly means it. This is the kind of marriage he wanted. And maybe he's realised that no other woman will love and take care of his mother the way I will. It ends up being one of the best birthdays ever and all I do is laze about on the sofa with my mother-in-law and have lunch at a Turkish restaurant. I think it's because I feel like a have a family now.
