“Who’s Emerson?”
It takes a minute for me to catch on that he’s referring to what I quoted in Fundamentals of Magic this morning.
“Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was a writer and philosopher in the OR.”
“Ah,” he says with a nod, then a subtle lift of the shoulder. “Haven’t had the opportunity to read much from the OR.”
“Other than Blake?”
A muscle in his cheek twitches at my recognition. “What I could find, I read.” He hikes up his brow. “So, have any other talents, kindler?”
I throw the question back at him. “Do you have other talents?”
“Oh, I have many. Magical and otherwise.” A cocky grin and a pair of dimples, there and gone in a flash. “I’m a beast-keeper, aeromancer, and hydromancer.”
“Really?” My voice pitches higher against my control. “So you’re one of the two…the dean told me there are two students with three talents this year.”
“Oh? On speaking terms with Dean Alder already? Wouldn’t have figured you for a hobnobber.”
“Hobnobber?!”
“So you also have three talents?”
“I’m not—! What? Well, no.” I push my hair back as he eyes me questioningly. I hesitate, then decide, what’s the point. “Beast-keeper, mind-caster, geomancer, kindler.”
Cyrus raises his eyebrows even higher and blinks a few times, but then lets his expression even out, apart from one corner of his mouth. “What a handful.”
Something in his tone makes me clench my back teeth.

“Oh, I’ll be gentle with you…” She removed herself from Meya’s hold and pushed her onto her back. She lowered herself between Meya’s legs and pulled down her underwear, tossing them to the floor. “What are you—” Meya gasped as Nina took her hood into her mouth and flicked her tongue against her clit. Waves of pleasure surged through her body and she arched her back, a long moan escaping her lips. “Gentle enough?” Nina asked before resuming her actions. Meya gripped the sheets, but then moved her hands to Nina’s head and entwined her fingers in her raven hair. A moan resembling the word ‘yes’ was all she could reply. Pleased, Nina slid her fingers between Meya’s lips and let one slip inside of her. She moved it in and out whilst continuing to lick her swelling clit. Meya’s moans and tight hold on her hair encouraged her to add a second finger. Meya gasped and then whimpered, “I want you.” Nina rose, locking her gaze with Meya’s. “You already have me.” She smiled slyly as Meya tugged at her hair to get her face closer to hers. Nina moved up but kept her hand in place and in motion. With zeal, Meya claimed Nina’s mouth, one hand still in her hair whilst the other gripped her butt. As they kissed passionately, Meya’s fingers peeled away Nina’s underwear. Fully exposed, she slipped her fingers between Nina’s slick folds once more. Nina moaned, though most of it got silenced by Meya’s mouth covering hers. Their bodies writhed in passion, the world reduced to just that room, that bed, their forms. They were completely lost in the moment until Meya suddenly froze. Confused, Nina stopped. “What’s wrong?” “Shh, listen.” The sounds of multiple people walking through the hallways slipped into their world and shattered it. Male voices, their chatter mostly about a decent bed and meals, resounded through the door. “Oh gods, they’ve returned,” Meya w

“Do you think they heard us?” Nina rolled off her and pulled up the sheets. “I don’t think so… They would be knocking if they had, right?” “I suppose…” They listened in silence to the boots passing them by and fragments of conversation. When it finally calmed down, they both sighed in relief. “I guess we need to be extra careful in the morning when going out,” Meya said softly. “Actually, it’s probably safer to go back to sleeping in our own room.” Meya pouted. “But I’m used to having you close every night. I can’t just go back to sleeping all alone.” Nina cupped Meya’s cheek. “I don’t like it either, but with the—” Nina fell silent and slowly turned her head towards the door. Meya’s heart constricted in her chest as she followed Nina’s frightened gaze. “…didn’t ask any of the servants to clean it up after your last stay, but as that was only one night, I assume it’s still in good condition. I’ll ensure Kadeem cleans it up in the morning.” “I’m just glad I can sleep in a normal bed.” The sound of keys sent adrenaline coursing through both women. Terrified, they exchanged glances, the both of them thinking the same thing: ‘We forgot about Commander Andreas!’ The door swung open, and Lord Deminas entered. He held up an oil lamp, though the fire in the hearth already illuminated a large part of the room. He raised a brow but didn’t speak as he looked at the women, then at the towel that had been blocking their light from spilling underneath the door, and then back at the women. Meya’s breath hitched. We’re dead. We’re done for.

"They will never come near you again." His words come out slow. I think he spoke through gritted teeth. I think he meant every word.
I lift my head and appraise his face. He's serious. "What?"
Ash lifts his chin. "You heard me."
"But I don't have to listen." I have a niece and a nephew and another one on the way.
He can't keep me from visiting the baby when he or she is born.
"You are my wife and I will not let them hurt you again."
"So that you can be the only one that hurts me?" I ask, my tone scathing.
He closes his eyes tightly for a second. "I can't control how you feel but I can control who you see. And I forbid you from seeing them again."
I jump to my feet. "Fine. I guess I'll have to make new friends." I leave my food and stalk to my room.

‘Never be sorry for having a feeling,’ he said gently. ‘Do you want to tell me about it?’

‘I don’t know where to start.’ Stories had to have a beginning, middle and end, a clear order where everything fitted together, and all she had was a jumble of events and feelings and thoughts that were probably all over-reactions, and he’d think her even more of a fool than he already did.
