Kahyla hung up her cloak on the hook near the aprons. No butcher’s offal but a dead man’s blood had seeped into the cloth. A mark of her decision to end his life, a mark she loathed to forget by washing away the evidence.
Sleeping saints, she knew she should be grateful to Despard for saving her life. She was, but instead she focused on the choice he’d handed her, giving her responsibility for the man’s death. Despard gave her the consequences of her decision befouling her clothes, not hidden from her like a child shielded from unpleasant truths. Lady Maret had hidden from Kahyla the rejected alliances, when the prospects had refused to marry a bastard daughter.
After her mother’s death, the attempts on the Tamrin children’s lives had exploded. Master Dimmon, the Tamrin Master at Arms and more a father to her than Baron Grath, had stopped a charging woodcutter as Kahyla inspected a farmer’s goods outside Tamrin Manor. Hustled away to a side door, Kahyla crushed snap-peas in her hand as blood fell on the stone steps of the manor. Scrubbed clean within the hour, the stones forgot the event.
Dimmon killed for sworn duty to his liege-lady. Despard said he only killed for coin. Why did Despard kill for her? There was no other choice she could have made but she owned the death she brought to his feet.
Kahyla tied the apron over her simple work dress. Despard trusted she had the strength to deal with his gift, with her decision. Because of Despard’s belief, she found she did.

“Sundancer Orange,” Tio spoke clearly and slowly. “This emergency procedure was put in place to address events where an ambassador has credible fears of life-threatening risk to either themselves or the Calling at large.” He spun his sled to face the PQs, lowering his incredible bejeweled head. “The Vi'isser clan may not technically invoke the procedure, as they are not ambassadors.”
“I am petitioning the emergency status; my companions spoke out of turn.” Snotty guy from yesterday with the creepy black chin mask didn’t even hesitate to butt in. Had they premeditated their plan of attack?
“Qo Uitu’umen,” Tio demanded, “provide your evidence of imminent threat.”
The previous cacophony died, leaving an audience of ambassadors on tenterhooks.

I feel myself tense—this is where things always go awry.

Memories and concerns unfurl like strips of velcro, their tiny hooks catching at the soft fabric of my mind. My name whispered behind my back. The rubbery soles of the entire field training class in front of me. Vega’s underwhelmed face.

Almost three weeks of trying to kindle, and not even a spark. I’m convinced the Rite of Epiphany glitched. It’s actually laughable that anyone would think I belong in Asterios.

Older memories zip by as well, hurried bodies on a busy sidewalk. Too hasty to grasp, too jarring to ignore.

“Remember, emotions need not send you anywhere you do not wish to go. Like balloons—you can let them carry you away, or you can simply let go of the strings.”

But what if they feel like they’re tied around your neck?
