Yeah I think we need an ATProto Community Labeler (like the Game Dev labeler, people can choose their labels). That will give a nice ATProto feed. I mostly opt out of correcting disinfo especially for small accounts. Just block.

im glad atproto is a federated network and that clients aren't peer to peer

oh my god

@ross @dredmorbius l've been following moderation discussions on Aether, a p2p Reddit, and people are like "get this nazi content off my computer! !! asdfghjkl;" Idk if it counts as being a service provider, but if you're running a p2p network sharing and serving data you don't control, yes that "race realism" pamphlet might end up being stored and shared from your computer

It's interesting to compare this to ActivityPub/Mastodon. The PDS is the "missing piece" in Mastodon; its absence causes problems. ActivityPub (decentralized node-to-node comms) is the "missing piece" in ATProto. Why not combine the two? …Well because then you could talk to no one on either network.

It shouldn't take the kind of admirable, laudable, amazing work that it's taken Blacksky to setup an equivalent atProto instance, it shouldn't take a user guide to move instances & it shouldn't rest with Blacksky, Northsky & others to build the easy, one-click versions of this: that's Bluesky's job.

always was! "start your own atproto instance for distributed FREEDOM!! no we still have you blocked on the appview that 99.999% of users use, why, is that a problem"

in the end, it means that anyone telling you to "start your own instance" is telling you to get fucked and leave

see it was fine that this was just an example of what ATProto can do,... but then they're also treating it like a full blown social media if this was just a big experiment it would've never made it out of beta they need to focus on the tech, and let competent people run the goings on of bsky

My position on ATProto, as a protocol, is that the Good Part is the PDS¹. Everything good about ATProto comes from the PDS. It's "everything else" that is the source of the problems — centralization, high barriers to entry, tendency to monopoly, some of the censorship. ¹ "Personal Data Server"

Misinfo in general is something I've wanted to tackle more with Skywatch, but it I've largely been thinking about it in terms of using something like Newsguard. I think for specific communities like ATProto, we'd need mods trusted by the community to review things

I'm not saying that Bluesky's moderation/governance is great or even good, but the tools exist for anyone not to be held captive by that fact. The whole point of bluesky+ATproto was turning moderation over the community on an open protocol so that centralized moderation could be sharply reduced.

I mean pretty clearly I think their TOS implies that they will ban you for posting stuff that's not allowed. To me this seems like a basic necessity for atproto's whole idea of one identity with many distinct representations across different apps to even work.

the entire first half of this post is wrong - Bluesky has never had a public “likes” section and nothing about the behavior of like has changed on atproto or Bluesky (the second part about the ban is true tho I think it was reversed? That sucked tho 0/10)

I think I'm done commenting on bluesky leaderships "maybe if we keep saying ToS and atproto, they won't think we're transphobes schtick". It's incredibly tedious. These people have the emotional maturity of toddlers and nonexistent moral convictions.

As long as most of the people who use atproto are on bluesky, every decision you make reflects on the protocol not just bluesky. It's the first to use it, so it sets the expectations. You can't not know this. Saying "go away" to your userbase is now a strat you've placed on the board. Now every...

.. Isn't some special thing atproto invented, it's a philosophical reality. Most companies operate under this assumption. Yet no company in their right mind would tell their customers to shop somewhere else. However here you are doing it. The question on everyone's mind is whether or not it's cuz..

.. team that uses atproto knows they can just say "it's atproto, don't like our decisions, go away" to deep ideological divides between management and users. That's the example you've set now. You're saying, very clearly, that any social media site that uses atproto does not have a responsibility..

Wait for the tools to be built by people who do ATProto is in its infancy and while it feels like it’s been a long time, it really hasn’t. Most people irl haven’t heard of Bluesky and they definitely haven’t heard of ATProto We’re just getting started

Serious question: say I run my own atproto PDS and app view, and I use it to post stuff that is too hot for Bluesky (for example, maybe it says 'lol' in the wrong way). Does the protocol have an affordance to essentially say: don't even show this to bluesky users?

mastodon users gladly set up their own instance as a weekend project for fun, but there's no alternative versions of bluesky, and that's for a very good reason maybe yall wouldnt have to deal with these uproars over moderation and TOS decisions if ATProto wasn't just vaporware idk
