Should be mostly photos of beaches i've been to. Saltwater beaches, not lake beaches. these will all be around Vancouver Island. looks for the word "beach" in alt text so there may be the occasional photo of something else

i'm not going All The Way Back Up There tomorrow, but by Thursday i should be ready i've just been tying flies, reorganizing flyboxes & tying materials, cleaning reels & lines, ... stuff that's a winter activity most places. i even had a nap earlier, but now it's bedtime
A selection of fishing flies illuminated by a UV flashlight. at left: a couple of minnow imitations; at right, 4 fluorescent "pink handlebar" flies with chartreuse heads, one pink & silver dart style fly, & one blue handlebar type with chartreuse head
Messy table with my fly tying vise & a couple of translucent plastic cases with little boxes inside where i keep most of my fly tying hooks and beads
an organized-looking white Morell foam fly box with rows of flies for pink and coho salmon, in mostly pink and blue colour schemes. these are mostly beach flies, but they work in rivers too. i didn't tie anywhere near all of these this week - i just reorganized this box. some of these flies are over 10 years old

I posted the video of China Beach yesterday, but i don't think i put these two stills in that thread get refreshed from the summer mugginess just looking at it
A sandy beach on a very low surf day with a small wave that has just broken, and beginning to recede from the sand with some white foam. A thickly forested, hilly landform is in the distance, and the sky is partly cloudy with a grey marine layer obscuring the Olympic Mountains on the opposite shore of the strait. The sea is slightly rippled from a mild breeze. The smooth area behind the sea foam on shore gives a hint at the swell period (long and low)
Same beach but with small waves breaking on it. These are mostly little wind waves, there is almost no swell to speak of today and the tide is just a little bit short of high for this spot

i'm home from my Very Long Day! Actually i think i got home slightly less than 12 hours after i left, almost unprecedented for a round trip to Victoria featuring several scenic stops & also (very minor) SURGERY! Bit of a photo thread before my tylenol 3 kicks in:
Looking down through tall, slender cedars & Douglas firs, and lush green undergrowth of salal & ferns, onto a glimpse of China Beach on southwest Vancouver Island. A bank of fog & low cloud hugs the horizon & obscures the Olympic Mountains across the strait

got a line wet, got myself wet (somewhat) but i also feel like i got a slight case of heat exhaustion, ugh it was brutally hot today & even standing in a river wasn't enough (shorts & wading boots, not chest waders, gah!) another beach (didn't fish here, needless to say) & a glimpse of the fire
A cobblestone beach on a blue summer day with the tide way, way out. the calm sea and landforms are all very far away
Another view of the same low-tide beach, looking south, with little clumps of sea asparagus, some sandy patches & a few very shallow tidepools. it is a cloudless summer day
Zoomed view of part of the beach, smoke from the Wesley Ridge fire can be seen rising from the hazy blue hills in the distance. A few houses can be glimpsed under a dense stand of dark conifers above the high tide line on the beach

Where i used to live is just above the point of the green arrow i drew in the top pic when i was explaining the prevailing summer wind pattern here in a chat. This wind is called a "qualicum": both Qualicum & Squamish are named for winds, not vice versa www.eoas.ubc.ca/courses/a….

i had a full day of seeking salmon on east side beaches from Qualicum to Campbell River (didn't find em today, but they'll be here very soon) so it was mostly a day of looking at water, while broiling under the relentless sun, & i have lots of photos but let's get the bad part over with first 🧡
Smoke from the Wesley Ridge wildfire on Cameron Lake, Vancouver Island, above a rocky beach near Bowser. The smoke is forming an almost cumulus-like cloud at near right, and streaming to the left over the Salish Sea, with a dark bottom almost like a storm cloud
The early evening sun glowing red through the smoke plume from the Wesley Ridge wildfire, as seen from highway 4 headed west toward it
Another view from the highway showing the smoke plume streaming over the ridge from the left. it's a dirty greyish orange against the blue summer evening sky

i do believe i will check out the pink scene on the east side this evening. Tides are right. depending on how it goes, i may go first thing in the morning tomorrow too, cuz i'd sure love it if they decided to show up at that lower "bonefishy" beach again #FlyFishing
blue cooler, fly rod with green line & black reel, a spool of 8lb leader, a fly box labeled "Pink / Beach" & a bottle of water
a hefty male pink salmon lying on a gravel bar next to my beach rod & the black STH reel i still can't seem to find. Yes, this fish wound up on a barbecue
Anglers at dusk at one of my favourite fly-fishing beaches when the pink salmon are running in summer

This is the beach where i first caught surfperch on the fly, in 2004. it's on the north end of the island. I had my gear with me on this hike (2020), but alas the wind was roaring & i couldn't find any fish But that's the other thing about surfperch: just *being* where they *might* be, is enough

Surfperch are the bonefish of the northwest coast. And almost no one targets them here #FlyFishing Didn't find any yesterday, but i will... this was a good warmup for beach fishing for salmon on the east side, which'll be coming right up πŸ“· @elnath1984.bsky.social

we can live beside the ocean, leave the fire behind cast out past the breakers... watch the world die
my left hand with a tattoo-patterned sun sleeve, holding up my beach flyrod, against a background of an apparently deserted sandy beach with the wet sand reflecting dark coniferous trees. hip-to-head-high surf can be seen breaking in the distance. The sky is overcast
Looking down the expanse of smooth beach towards distant breakers and a small, forested island. The sky is the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel

touched not grass, but water & stone with more planned for tomorrow with @elnath1984.bsky.social
Looking down into a shallow bay of clear sea water, with a bottom of many colourful pebbles
The bay in the previous photo, viewed from higher up on the rocks. the opposite shore is a headland of rocks, dry summer grass, & windblown conifers, it is a beautiful clear blue summer day
a more shaded bay, with a cobblestone beach and bleached driftwood logs. The forest is quite dense and green against the blue sky

Dang i realized it was #ThingThursday last night & then i gapped out & went to bed without posting a Thing. So here: A lump of "flowerstone" porphyry from a favourite beach on the east side of the island
A rounded dark grey stone speckled with vaguely flower-shaped pale crystalline inclusions. The base rock is basalt, & the flower shapes are feldspar.
The beach where the flowerstone came from, at low tide on a clear blue summer day. If you love grapefruit-sized, sea-smoothed rocks of various types, this is the beach for you.

Ever since i moved the pitcher plant @birb.mom gave me into the bathroom window, which faces north, it's been acting happier & finally starting to make pitchers. I think it appreciates the extra humidity, plus i'm in there several times a day so i don't forget to water it. I've also fed it a bit
A pitcher plant with small, undeveloped pitchers on the ends of some leaves, sits on a white windowsill with a large marquee letter "M" in the window, a blue glass "mickey mouse" type insulator, a round Martinelli Apple Juice bottle partially full of beach glass, and a tiny grey plastic owl

Oh cool, CBC Radio's "On The Island" read my letter about snorkeling in this lovely spot (Moorecroft Park) last summer. There's a new outdoor swimming guidebook out, they interviewed one of the authors, it sounds really great greystonebooks.com/produc….
A calm sheltered bay on the east side of Vancouver Island on a cloudless sunny summer day. The rocky beach in the foreground is mostly in shade

can i offer you a deserted beach in this troubled time? thread of some favourite beaches incoming, gonna see if i can set up a beach feed 🧡
A sandy beach, with breaking surf far in the distance, a sky full of grey clouds with a sense of movement to them, and 3 dark, densely forested headlands at the left, the farthest one appearing blueish from the distance. A dark thin line entering the image at left just below the landforms is a tea-coloured river that empties into the sea here. No humans are in visible in this shot. June 2020

just a really crappy beach. why would anyone ever want to come here.
A cobblestone beach at low tide on a flat calm, brilliantly clear late summer day. A forested point of land sticks out in the distance at far left, and beyond it are a couple of low, sloping islands. There are a lot of rounded rocks in various shades of grey.
A cobblestone beach at low tide on a flat calm, brilliantly clear late summer day. Looking out over the Salish Sea to more distant islands, and beyond them, to the peaks of the Coast Range on the BC mainland.

There sure are a lot of pleasingly rounded rocks on this beach.
A cobblestone beach at low tide on a flat calm, brilliantly clear late summer day. Looking towards the southeast across a vast expanse of round grey rocks to where the sky begins to blur and blend into the flat blue sea.
A cobblestone beach at low tide on a flat calm, brilliantly clear late summer day. Looking directly down the beach towards the next distant wooded point of land. A few conifer trees grow above the high tide line, and someone has built a tepee-like structure out of driftwood. There are no people on this entire expanse of beach. People don't like their beaches to consist of grapefruit sized round rocks, i guess. The rocks here are wonderful.

the nighthawks have NOT left for the south yet - i saw a bunch above the Hamilton Marsh area on my way to check out this beach. Crickets and killdeer here. No sign of pink salmon that i could see, but a few anglers were down by Powerlines (past the right edge of the photo on the right)
Early dusk with a reddish glow on the horizon and a scattered splash of slate grey cloud, above a cobblestone beach with a few very old stumps of pilings from a long-gone pier in the foreground. a couple low sloping islands are in the distance and above one of them is the zigzagged remains of a jet contrail, glowing orange with the last rays of the sun
Looking off to the southeast along the same beach, with the many-coloured cobblestones more visible in the evening light. More old pier piling stumps line the shore and a distant island is blue in the Venus' Belt earthshadow.

πŸ“·πŸ§΅ i'm just going to add to this photo thread slowly. i didn't have much time for nature enjoyment on my "medical appointment + other big-city errands" trip to Victoria yesterday, but i took my time driving back up island, & stopped for an hour in this gorgeous park which was unexpectedly deserted
a sheltered little bay on the Salish Sea, east coast of Vancouver Island, viewed through some slender trees. There is a little cobble beach and some trees. the tide is in & it's a calm blue early evening in summer. there are no other people around

Came home with some Indian spices & stuff (including the hing i was looking for), got my Lee Valley tools, narrowly avoided a VERY bad traffic jam on the highway out (had to ditch the idea of going home via Port Renfrew) & stopped for a good hour's walk at this place
