Then: Golden Verse is the name I’ve given the original setting and art project featuring my two main OCs, Tychon Whitfrost and Luka del’Aguaro. The project covers the their shared career as university professors. It develops through their personal and professional growth, and in their romantic relationship.

This project is to help others understand the worldbuilding I’ve developed for them. I wanted their world to be real and feel like they belonged somewhere. Then it started growing into a fully realized worldstate that I want to share.

what is gold? #whatisGV

What is golden verse? what is GOLD?
In universe, gold is sort of the carbon of the world. It is the source of magic, and as a result the source of life. All life is rooted in magical energy.

Gold is also extremely, extremely dangerous in large amounts. Gold naturally wants to draw towards itself, and the larger the mass the more it pulls, to the point of destabilizing gold that already exists in homeostatic environments like a person’s body. Destabilized gold means destabilized magic, and it will run amok and ultimately kill the person. It is required for life, but is also a bit like something horrifically radioactive.

Tychon researches bones, and one thing he will do with them is use his own magic to reveal natural ley lines embedded in the bone. Magic use causes the body to “embed” trace pathways of gold deposits in bone, and he can see them using his own to “reactivate” the line.

As a result of the nature of gold, it’s not a metal that can be mined and is not used in any way in industry, clothing, etc. I draw Luka and Tychon both with “gold” piercings, but canonically they’d be another yellow colored metal.

what are the "Graces"? #whatisGV

The Graces are the unknown but extant source of gold and magic. They are an unthinking, unfeeling mass of molten gold that forms the center of the planet. Think of the planet as an egg. The Graces use veins of their body that reach out to the surface of the egg to make life that will maintain the surface of the egg and “condition” the gold in their bodies back into the Graces when they die. It’s like the water cycle. But for a hidden planet sized sort-of-living mass.

The Graces, despite being the ultimate source of life, are not worshiped as a god. They didn’t name themselves. In fact “the Graces” is just the name people gave to “the source of magic and life itself” without really thinking on what that source *was*. The Graces require no acknowledgement and wouldn’t be able to understand or receive it even if they got it.

They’re like an embryo, and their existence is not known to the people of the world. People name this source and use it as a sort of mild curse. If someone is starteld or surprised they might say “Oh, Graces”. A parent might scold their child by asking if the Graces gave them any sense.

What are Verses? #whatisGV

The Graces are the source of all life, but require only one thing: stability. If they have created a race of surface maintaining people that throw things out of balance through greed or violence, they withdraw the magic supply to them, and the people will die. The energy the Graces are taking in through the surface is sensitive, and if the supply is damaged, they will just try again and again until it’s right.

Each attempt results in a “generation” of sentient beings. Not all human, or humanoid. Not all sapient. Much like reality, in a timespan of millions and millions of years, the Graces have nothing but time. Evolution occurs in time, but life may not have to start from zero each time. A humanoid race may be formed by the graces in near-modern state of physical development.

In the present generation in which Tychon an Luka live, they sort their history into “Verses”. Think of it as a synonym to “era”.

Tychon & Luka live in a time of technological and academic advancement. Things are starting to really grow and expand. The people are spreading out and exploring the world more, asking “why” more. Historians and sociologists of the time call it the “Golden Verse”.

what are dwarves? #whatisGV

Dwarves in the Golden Verse are the oldest of the races and are the most morphologically distinct. Short, stocky people with wide frames, dwarves are single sexed and lack gender distinction. Any dwarf can bear or sire a child. Dwarves are historically reliant on the ocean and live on coastlines. They are usually dark skinned with dark sclera and pupils that range from near-white to no darker than a middling silver-blue. Hair color usually ranges in warm shades of orange to pink to red. The hair extends to the jaw from the sideburns, but not into facial hair. Dwarves also have a “scruff” of hair that may trail down the spine but always across the shoulders from the neck. If long enough, the shoulder and back scruff may be braided to keep tidy.

Dwarves have a strict social hierarchy in terms of aesthetic and appearances. They place a high value on personal hygiene and upkeep. Their thick, coarse hair is usually braided and kept in tight styles that don’t dangle much. Jewelry is popular, but chain necklaces or long earrings are not in favor as it tends to get caught in the scruff. Dwarves living out of traditionally Dwarven environments often eschew the typical expected appearance standards.

Dwarves can interbreed with the other races, but due to their single-sex nature, the child will be the same birth sex as their non-dwarf parent. They can not self reproduce.

Dwarves are naturally excellent swimmers and historically spend a lot of time at sea, gathering both food and materials from underwater. Modern shipping companies frequently are headed by a dwarf, or are expected to hire experienced dwarves as captains or first mates.

making this as an art share-able post so i don't end up reposting the same thing over and over and over! Also doubling as a pinned post for a bit! I'm sadie! these are my boys Tychon (elf) and Luka (beard) from my original setting #whatisGV #gvlore
