🍺✨ Was one of Ireland’s most powerful families hiding a queer secret? Arthur Guinness was married, but had no children — and the marriage was described as “unconventional.” According to The Irish Times, Arthur was “probably gay,” and his wife accepted it. #HouseOfGuinness 📷 Ins: @ netflix

From 1962-99 Gay Byrne’s TV and radio shows dovetailed from the early days of Irish mass electronic media to Ireland’s emergence as the Celtic Tiger. This book is an interesting look at how he not so much challenged Irish society but led the conversation as it evolved. Yes they called him Gaybo.
Cover of “The Gaybo Revolution: How Gay Byrne Challenged Society,” by Finola Doyle O’Neil. I found it in a bookstore in Limerick, Ireland

I refuse to pay for the Irish Times while it has a homophobic iona institute creep like Breda O'Brien in it. Was Ireland healthier & happier when abused women couldn't divorce their abusers? When gay men were imprisoned for being gay? When unmarried mothers were enslaved? That's Catholic Ireland!

Breda O'Brien: Nobody can claim the decline of Catholic influence has led to a happier or healthier society

[29] Francis Bacon (1909-92) was Ireland’s greatest painter of the 20th C as well as a major visionary. An Expressionist, his work was inspired by an Irish concern with religion & existentialism, a charged nihilism & a gay awareness. He was rejected by the theocracy.
