I don’t typically read our stories while I’m away but I loved seeing this in my inbox. Well done to @molliesimpson.bsky.social for her nom at the British Journalism Awards, recognising one of the best pieces of journalism in the country this year. manchestermill.co.uk/a-hu

I like real news, that’s true! And I can do it on a blog. Or I can do it in a vlog. And I can do it in a zine, Or on TikTok—short, sharp, and keen. And I can do it in a pod, with questions asked that press and prod. Yes, I can do it here or there. I can do journalism anywhere!

Creators are helping to reach important audiences with journalism, often outstanding, innovative journalism. They are helping to inform people legacy media isn't reaching. We need to enable, fund, and include these people in the ecosystem of trustworthy sources.
Chart showing that 51% of people age 18-24and 46% of people aged 25-34 pay attention to creators on social media.

The answer to the question, "Are people performing acts of journalism 'journalists' ?" is always YES.

So much criticism of journalism isn't very useful to make it better for the future. However, this conversation contains a lot of just that: useful, insightful, and actionable criticism. From @taylorlorenz.bsky.social, @maxtani.bsky.social, @jelaniya.bsky.social and @jackshafer.bsky.social

Large Language Models made not be great at facts, but they're becoming impressively good at editing — and that speaks to their potential value both in journalism and in new news products. My (now-regular) blog for the Tow-Knight Center at CUNY. bit.ly/3L1LNTD

What are Large Language Models good at?  And why does that matter? To be sure, there’s a long list of things they’re not good at, which we spend a lot of time dwelling on — not least disce

“It’s easier
to placate the bear rather than poking it. We know this is happening not only in journalism but in other fields. We just don’t know how much. No one puts out news releases saying they’ve squelched information the administration wouldn’t like.” www.politico.com/news/mag

Imagine, for example, trying to raise revenue through membership. People are keen to join, but they are frightened that the government will find out that they are supporting independent journalism. Or worrying about sponsored content produced for NGOs, because they have links to the govt.

At the IPI conference in Vienna and surprised at the degree of wishful thinking and nostalgia about the continuing decline in media freedom at least from some mainstream editorial leaders : 'journalism is a public good, we just need to convince the public' seems to be the gist of it #IPIWoCo25

Wild to see how some of the most prestigious journalism brands are being destroyed at such a rapid pace. I think this brings us closer to a future where all content we see is some kind of marketing (for a party, a company, a 'cause'). Support independent journalists.

Some news: The Washington Post is preparing to cut newsroom staff even after several high profile exits. Bezos’ new opinion editor has privately told people The Post is in “severe financial distress.” Details in @status.news www.status.news/p/washington...

The EBU just published a new report on how well consumer AI chatbots function as gateways to news by public service media – an interesting piece, but with some big problems in my view that make me question its usefulness. buff.ly/X9ident
Largest study of its kind shows AI assistants misrepresent news content 45% of the time – regardless of language or territory

New research coordinated by the EBU and led by the BBC has found that AI assistants routinely distort or misrepresent public service journalism.

Pretty stunning drop in views after @davejorgenson.bsky.social left the Washington Post to join independent journalism in the creator economy. The future of independent, audience centric journalism is being built, brick by brick. This is a big one.

The increasingly unpopular and desparate Hungarian government is identifying fake enemies before the upcoming elections. Again, OCCRP is being attacked to deflect people away from the excellent journalism done by local menber centers like Atlatszo and Direkt36. www.occrp.org/en/announcem...
