I've only come across one example of jack-and-jill kitchens, it looks like an experiment that didn't work - others simply built larger apartments designed for a group of friends to share a kitchen. The building with the jack-and-jill kitchens is being replaced by a larger normal apartment building.

Lots of academic and general interest articles written about Double Duplexes - does anyone know if there's an article that follows more the format of a business plan, with timeline, cost calculations, etc? If not I might write one.

As far as weird designs, the strangest of all college town floorplans that I've seen is the jack-and-jill kitchen, which is essentially two apartments - rented separately - sharing a kitchen. Had a couple friends who lived in this building many years ago and they said it was indeed awkward.

The latest on Double Duplexes in this article by @henrygrabar.bsky.social. They're common in Los Angeles, especially near the University of $outhern California, where most students live off-campus. bsky.app/profile/henr...

I wrote about LA’s 23-bedroom apartments, which are legal, profitable, and spreading like crazy slate.com/business/202...

In this case, we can't, since even after the Middle Housing rezone, boarding houses and other group housing is only allowed in Berkeley's commercial zones and the higher density residential zones - see page 3 of berkeleyca.gov/sites/defaul...

how is any of this not good for the US? and there are other popular things that would have helped! having a clear and bold climate plan, instituting a UBI or other assistance, a national housing and rent control strategy, there's so, so much that would have made for a better campaign.

Lot coverage is 60% max, which is close to what's physically possible after subtracting the required yards. Both the lot coverage and yard regulations can be waived if a project provides low or middle income housing for a density bonus.

Speaking of college towns, I've heard of the opposite architectural hack before - getting around limits on the number of bedrooms by installing sinks (and occasionally even toilets) in rooms and calling them bathrooms on the plans.

✊ Way to go, Louisville Tenants Union! The conditions these people have been forced to live in are horrific and unacceptable. Nobody should be forced to live like this. Together we can fight for what we deserve.

These are all valid criticisms of the survey that the UDOT spokesperson wasn’t able to address

I’m glad that Salt Lake City and Sweet Streets SLC are calling out this awful survey. Only leading questions about potentially negative impacts of traffic calming; no questions about its benefits. This is a sign that UDOT isn’t taking this study seriously and only wants to confirm the Leg’s bias

Utah transportation officials have started work on a study of Salt Lake traffic following a bill that caused a recent stir. City officials have concerns about a new survey tied to it.
