Like Issa Rae’s Insecure with a magical realist spin, River Mumma is an exhilarating contemporary fantasy novel about a young Black woman who navigates her quarter-life-crisis while embarking on a mythical quest through the streets of #Toronto. More: buff.ly/3ENTrOc

EL MENSAJE (The Message) - Magical Realism & a Coming of Age Tale

Borja reviews EL MENSAJE (The Message) from Berlinale 2025. It is a poignant coming of age story about a girl serving as a animal medium.

**FINISHED** 5/5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Wow! I loved everything about this book. 3 stories in 1. Magical realism at its finest. Ancestors from centuries ago, from 1912, and from present day. Women’s issues. Overall fantastic. #booksky #magicalrealism #books #reading #reader

Book review: The Husbands, by Holly Gramazio #booksky #bookreview #magicalrealism
The Husbands book review: I absolutely devoured this book. It was so weird and so original and didn't explain the magical realism aspects at all, which is exactly how I wanted it to be. I found the ending extremely satisfying. Sometimes it felt like reading through crap on r/relationships, which was *perfect*.

“Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wanted to love this book. Concept is intriguing & how it’s written in journal form is unique. But it didn’t have the payoff I wanted. Some reviewers have mentioned it would do better as a novella & I agree. #booksky #bookreview #piranesi #fantasy #magicalrealism

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌗 I enjoyed this book, particularly its discussions on grief, death, and learning to let people in. I also thoroughly appreciated the plug for going to therapy. The magical realism added a fantastical touch while the story remained grounded in reality. #booksky 💚📚 #bookreview #magicalrealism
The cover of the book “The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic” by Breanne Randall. The cover is blue with teal leaves on it. Yellow stars dot the cover. Underneath the title is a pretty, yellow, steaming teacup with a moon and stars motif. On the front of the teacup is a waxing crescent moon with swirling clouds in front of it. Steam lazily rises from the teacup and swirls through the title.

12. Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan. Effortlessly appeals to both children and adults with wonderful art and magical realist storytelling, focused on life in the suburbs. Combining prose and visual storytelling in a unique but easily accessible manner.

I’m looking for what I like to call “weird and wonderful” YA novels. Magic realism, or stories that blend genres to create something new. Examples: Wilder Girls by Rory Power, They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, and The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton. #MSWL

In genre fiction: fantasy (shorter, mostly standalone books—epic fantasy series are not for me), grounded science fiction, magical realism, retellings of fairy tales, horror. #MSWL

6/ SPECULATIVE: “five-minutes-into-the-future” fiction that remains grounded in real human emotions and conflict (think Ling Ma or TJ Klune). Magical realism should feel organic and lyrical, where everyday life brushes against the surreal. Jesmyn Ward, Karen Russell, and Ruth Ozeki are the dream.
