it deeply bothers me that there’s tons of people who have never seen a movie from before 9/11 or never watched a TV show from back then or never seen a newscast that was at more objective than whatever the shit is we have now (don’t @ me with “but not everything was good back then”)
3 Amazon software engineers advocated that the city of Seattle pause data center buildouts leading to a unanimous vote for a 1-year moratorium on new data centers in the area. Amazon initiated disciplinary action and now the workers are suing for retaliation. Did they cross the line or did Amazon?
There is a push across corporate America, most heavily pushed in tech, that middle managers are no longer necessary in the age of AI. CEOs claim AI replaces the need for their status reports and instead senior employees should be hands-on “player coaches” not pure managers. I don’t buy it.
The EU is about to classify AWS and Azure as gatekeepers under the DMA. This is expected to lead to requirements around interoperability and data portability with other cloud providers. Given the EU’s push towards data sovereignty, this will make it easier to migrate off of US big tech clouds.
Mamdani is a transformational because he asked the question, what if a public servant actually served the public instead of lobbyists? Both Trump and Mamdani have shown the government can move fast if it wants. The question is whether we want it to move quickly to help us or to hurt others?
There's a special category of spam: dubious book promoters targeting authors. Mostly the emails are just lazy AI slop. But occasionally they are amusing, such as this one, praising the "character development, psychological depth" of a technical book that definitely has none of either of those 🤪
It's crazy that I tell the robot to write me some Ruby code using my own library and sqlite, with no context (i.e. GPT app, not Codex app, not in a project folder), just "use didkit and fetch plc ops and write it to db, rawdogging sqlite" and it gives me this 20 seconds later…
Just saw Toy Story 5. It’s an interesting watch as it’s basically an anti-device movie. It tackles how kids getting glued to screens hurts their development and creativity. The ending was well done and avoided alienating families by making them feel guilty over iPad use ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ out of ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
