I often wonder whether the bloke who bought my old house managed to stop the prick of a neighbour claiming he owned our second parking space at the rear. I tried to show him the land registry paperwork etc. Multiple times & he said it's wrong. Gave up as I only had one car.
I took a bunch of kids to Zootropolis 2 today (all authorised btw) and it was rammed, with many small people, and the atmosphere was very quiet and attentive. I’m not sure how true it is that cinema is always ruined by ‘other people’. I DO know I still hugely enjoy going, versus watching at home.
A vile column from Murdoch’s Times. Can they really believe child abuse is something that should be forgiven/forgotten? A newspaper that wrongly considers some Queer ppl subhuman & threats to children, but calls for >actual< child abusers, & their facilitators, to be forgiven? Sick stuff.
Girlfriend and I were on a beach on holiday. A gorgeous woman in a bikini walked past and set up behind us. A few minutes later my girlfriend whispers "that girl with the big boobs you were looking at, has just taken her top off if you want to look." I've never loved her more.
As part of Gaelic culture ppl are judged on their hospitality & generosity. We even have a word for it: flaithiulach. Indeed, the expectations of hospitality, by class, were laid down in the early medieval period in the Brehon Laws. There’s no worry about Ireland losing its culture.
Reform UK have repeatedly said that Kent is their "flagship" council and "the shop window" for how they intend to run things. When they are exposed as planning to slash social care for old people, in order to hire their cronies as advisors at £150k a pop, I think people should believe them. ~AA
All the Chris Rea obituaries are inevitably latching on to "Driving Home for Christmas" as his big hit but actually it peaked at number 53 when it originally came out. So it's perhaps the most famous example of the "Christmas compilation album" effect where a song becomes famous thru cd ubiquity
Trump's new Greenland envoy intends to make territory 'a part of the US' Denmark describes his comments as “completely unacceptable" and summons the US ambassador in a new eruption of tensions over the future of the vast Danish island news.sky.com/story/trumps...
Chris Rea's death reminds me that 1980s Irish radio DJs never formed a consensus on how his name was pronounced, you could hear a REEah or a REE or a RAY or even a RAY-AH, it was never the same twice, keep em guessin up there in heaven with Paddington Bear, big guy, RIP
I can't be bothered with Christmas after my mum passed away unexpectedly & I had to empty her house of all those years of consumerism, I have zero interest in continuing to fill our house with stuff I don't need, I'm getting a skip to start clearing crap in the new year.
🔴 A Lexicon for Life: Episode 1 - Loneliness Words are our species' greatest invention. Jay Griffiths, Joanna Scanlan and John Mitchinson present a podcast series built on eight powerful words to help us navigate through challenging times open.substack.com/pub/bylinesu...
If you haven't heard our mix of all the Christmas songs from ages ago, now's the time. We've moved it to Spymania's page - it's free to listen or download, but if you choose to pay 100% of the profits go to Fareshare, a charity helping those in food poverty. spymania.bandcamp.com/track/festiv...
From tomorrow night onwards, there’s a series of lighthearted Only Connect festive specials on BBC Two. But there’s a proper episode tonight at 8pm, for anyone who wants a last shot at difficulty before the liqueurs kick in. (When you watch tomorrow night’s, you’ll know how literally I mean that.)
Many will say we’ve been here before, but something is different this time. The consensus that stood firmly in favour of excluding the far right from power has been blown away. Superb deep-dive on upcoming French election by Olivier Morel. Highly recommended. Free trial to The Wire available. ~AA
It’s v hard to take seriously, a tulip who used his law degree to be responsible for urine-testing sailors in the US Navy & advising on torture legalities. A morally-shorted man with a tiny mind, all het up. Or at least as far as his platformed, elevator lifted, Cuban heels!*
i've been thinking recently about why i have a reflexive dislike of the 'comedy needs balance' line, and i think it's because political comedy is the act of saying "hey, you're not mad, the world really does look like THIS", and that doesn't need "balancing" because *the rest of society* does that
"It does look increasingly like Wes Streeting is on manoeuvres." "He would say 'Keir Starmer is here to stay' - but he's thinking, 'in case he's not, I need to do some positioning'." Is Wes Streeting defying the PM in calling for Britain to rejoin the EU customs union?
