Hey @heypresents.com attendees, if you're a CSS nerd, I'd love to get your view on a new CSS unit called 'pem' that me and some of the Chrome team are proposing at the CSSWG. We need your feedback on how it will work. Please come and find me if you're interested!

This lets you remove heavy 3rd Party JavaScript libraries like Floating UI. Pay down your tech debt by leveraging built-in browser functionality! Anchor Positioning is on Interop 2025's roadmap, so should be available soon!

This comes with a lot of goodies: - “Light dismiss” the popover by clicking outside of it. - Opening another popover on the page dismisses the first one. - Easily provide fallback positions with pure CSS - Conditionally hide the anchor-positioned element

Just wrote about a new pattern that I discovered using the Popover API, Anchor Positioning and Turbo Frames. You can now lazy load popover elements on a page and anchor them to the trigger element, all without a single line of custom JavaScript!

Safari has a feature now if you click on the icon circled you can select “hide distracting item” and it will disable the JavaScript for an ad when you select it. Also works for circumventing some paywalls.

I’ve starting using inline styles to pass overrides to our design system CSS framework (via custom props). It makes the system a lot more useable for unforeseen contexts without having to create a bunch of classes to account for every possible use case. Ex: pitviper.turquoise.health/components/m...
Pit Viper

pitviper.turquoise.health

Pit Viper

Documentation and CSS framework for Turquoise Health's design system, Pit Viper.

did I really inherit a typescript library right before it was supposed to go open source and begin its public beta, and then decide to rewrite the whole thing in a weekend? yes should I know better as a senior engineer? yes am I still doing it? alas, yes

one of these days i WILL learn how to self host a bot so i can include if-then statements outside the tracery (works fine in javascript) it would also be fun to be able to take input from replies (not just predict via regex). that would probably be a pretty big challenge for me
