I’m so glad I’ve taken part in #31DaysOfGraves this year - it’s motivated me to review hundreds of my #grave photos to find good examples and to do some research around them to add to the post or #AltText. Thank you, @annaandthedead.bsky.social

#31DaysOfGraves Day31: Memento Mori A late post for the last day of #October, this wall memorial to Elizabeth Teyly from the parish church in the village of Colerne between Bath and Chippenham. Full transcription in #AltText.

On the stone memorial, flanked by fluted classical columns in low relief, the central panel with a simple carved border and black lettering in capitals reads as follows, in modernised spelling (my own transcription):

As Nature paid the debt to Death,
Which Adam first did merit,
So doth my soul by Christ’s death
Eternal life inherit.
I die not, but do change my life, freed
Now from woes, from cares, from strife.

No sooner born but we begin to die
For in this grave, my house of rest, I lie
my soul to live with angels fly,
for I believe that Christ for me did die.

Memento Mori

Here lieth the body of Elizabeth, late wife of Thomas Teyly, who deceased the 20th day of July in the year of our Lord Anno Domini 1627

I fondly remembered the first #31daysofgraves in 2018, but unfortunately missed all those in between. As expected it was interesting, I learned a lot and saw heaps of fantastic photos. Short: a lot of fun. Thanks for compiling the topics, and thanks to everyone who participated.
