"Your health records will be on the block chain." "Everyone will live in the Metaverse." "All art will be NFTs." "Generative AI will replace the need for humans." We need to reckon with the reality that the tech industry no longer creates things that anyone wants.

The next time someone tells you some dumb-ass tech thing is "inevitable" even if a company has spent tens of billions of dollars on it

"Remember Zuckerberg's Cherished Metaverse? Now He's Firing the People He Hired to Build It" accompanied by a picture of Zuckerberg's ridiculous-looking avatar

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight. 1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms" 2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral 3) How tools are productized is not neutral [rant]

this is one of those space images that’s “so beautiful it looks like a painting” 🌌
A spiral galaxy seen at a skewed angle. Its centre is a bright spot radiating light. A thick, stormy disc of material surrounds this, with swirling strands of dark dust and bright spots of star formation strewn through the disc. A large spiral arm extends from the disc towards the viewer. Some foreground stars are visible atop the galaxy.

"writing" with generative AI is so confusing to me because like... you wouldn't become a scuba driver if you hate the water. if you don't like to write, why is it so important to be a writer?

I ran a 10 common questions LLMs struggle with through Qwen3 14B, compared to the original GPT-4o, and it did notably better. Incredible progress in one year to get a 14B model performing better/comparably to a 200B+ one.

had to chop the google doc into several insane pieces in order to get around the fact that their stupid system makes it impossible to manipulate documents larger than roughly ~75k words (or with a sufficiently large number of edit versions)

In a few years (max) when people start asking why we thought AI was a good idea I am creating a record that we did NOT think it was a good idea and the main reason people were ever convinced was billions of dollars of propaganda

added greyed out options when a connection cannot be accessed yet, and a hint on how to get there this doesn't always appear to hide secret choices and options you may not see until later when you progress the story it's very easy to set up and supports multiple requirements too.
choice dialogue option to show a greyed out "Go West" and the tooltip to explain why you can't go there yet as a hint

"why not use [language model] for this" well you see I take some amount of pride in having stuff to say that can't be predicted by a statistical estimate
