Sometimes people stole eels, but sometimes eel fishing was a gateway to greater crimes.
In 1667, 2 Lambeth men out fishing eels in Chatham harbor stole a quantity of twice-laid rope from the nearby HMS Vanguard. The harbor clerk who arrested them was quite annoyed.
