12 species for the #NewYearPlantHunt in #Arnside. Conditions were terrible. No unexpected species - Tripleurospermum maritimum was the highlight and the non-native Erica carnea added a bit of colour. No chance of 📷 so here's Ficaria verna from our garden instead #wildflowerhour

If only I’d gone into Ely city centre, I could have had a Shaggy soldier for the #NewYearPlantHunt. 😆 #WildflowerHour

Very little in flower in Connemara last week, but this sea pink was somehow hanging on by the Atlantic coast at Baile na hAbhainn. A late entry for #NewYearPlantHunt as well as this week’s #WildflowerHour

The highlight of my #NewYearPlantHunt, not least because it's actually native, was probably this very late-flowering Sea Campion. Near a footpath from the main road to the sea wall between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren. #WildflowerHour
A single white flower among a sea of green leaves. This isn't normally a winter-flowering plant.

We scratched our heads about a Speedwell during our #NewYearPlantHunt. I went back to the same location - the pavement just outside my house - and tried to get a decent photo of the fruits. Still not sure if it's Grey or Green Field Speedwell. Thoughts? #wildflowerhour #wildflowerID

A photo from my #NewYearPlantHunt which I did on new year's eve because the forecast for the 1st was terrible. Autumn Hawkbit, growing on the cliff at Dawlish, with just the railway between it and the sea, but high enough to be away from salt spray.
A confused mass of leaves of different species of plants (none of them are related to the flower), from which emerges a stalk with a single yellow flower.

Just entered my results via the app for @bsbibotany.bsky.social #NewYearPlantHunt. Perhaps my most surprising discovery was Cow Parsey, found crowing in the bank of an Anglesey lane.

I popped out yesterday after the rain and wind had died down. Whitlingham was shut, so I had a walk around north Norwich to Catton Park, seeing 16 species of bird & 16 plants in flower for the #NewYearPlantHunt. I also recorded some leaf mines - names in the ALT text.
A close up of a Holm Oak leaf with numerous leaf mines caused by the moth Ectoedemia heringella. These are narrow galleries filled with grass, widening out at the ends. Two of them have visible larvae in with dark gut-lines down the middle.
A close up of a dark green hellebore leaf with the wavy leaf mine of the Agromyzid fly Phytomyza hellebori.
Some green Cow Parsley leaves with a background of brown fallen tree leaves. Some of the pinnate bits of the Cow Parsley leaves have pale leaf mines of the Agromyzid fly Phytomyza chaerophylli.

It turns out that this hybrid Elephant Ears found naturalised on cliffs near Downderry, on a #newyearplanthunt is a first confirmed record for this species in VC2 East Cornwall. Bergen x schmidtii

Great summary of the last day of #NewYearPlantHunt 2024-25, with some nice background on how the project came to be. Plus a certain young Stirlingshire botanist takes centre stage with his Daisy 😍 Well done all who took part, and remember to submit your data before the end of Sunday!

So #NewYearPlantHunt is over for another year. Please send in all your records by Sunday so we can analyse them & report back. Meanwhile here's our Day 4 round-up: what we know so far, messages from the Hunt founders & a shout-out to the fab Support Team! bsbipublicity.blogspot.com/2025/01/new-...
