Rare O-type star powers NGC 6164, a 4-light-year-wide nebula with striking bipolar symmetry. Just 3–4 million years old, the star will end in a supernova. A faint halo hints at its active past. Also called the Dragon’s Egg, it lies 4,200 light-years away in Norma. Credit : Daniel Stern

Baby solar system Lynds 483 (NIRCam image). Processed by @yuvharpaz.bsky.social nerdculture.de/@yuvharpaz/1...
A NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) image of the dark cloud Lynds 483, highlighting a powerful bipolar jet. The jet is brightly illuminated with a mix of red, green, and blue hues, indicating different ionized gases and dust. It extends vertically from a bright, star-forming region at the bottom, against a backdrop of numerous faint stars. The image showcases the detailed structure and complex emissions within the cloud.

“It makes you very fast or very sad. Or both. Those are fun days. So judgement isn’t one of my big things. But I have a good voice. I can write well. I’m not a good bicycle rider. I’m just like everybody else, only louder and faster and then sleepy.” Happy bipolar day. Carrie was peak One Of Us.
Carrie Fisher sits at a panel table speaking into a microphone, with a colorful “Indiana Comic” banner behind her. She wears dark-framed glasses and a black outfit, with her long blonde hair pulled back. Several drink cups, including two Diet Cokes and a red cup, are on the table in front of her. Her expressions shift across eight frames as she gestures with her hands. The captions read:
	1.	“It’s a kind of a virus of the brain.”
	2.	“It makes you go very fast or very sad.”
	3.	“Or both. Those are fun days.”
	4.	“So, judgement isn’t one of my big good things.”
	5.	“But I have a good voice.”
	6.	“I can write well.”
	7.	“I’m not a good bicycle rider.”
	8.	“Just like everybody else, only louder and faster, and sleeps more.”

Some stuff that I learned about bipolar while I was in therapy.
The thing about bipolar disorder is that you can start to believe the manic you is the real you instead of accepting, loving and nurturing your whole self, highs and lows.

When a participant in the meeting asked him why he wouldn’t more forcefully call out Trump’s false claims about Social Security fraud, Dudek answered, “This is dealing with — have you ever worked with someone who’s manic-depressive?”

“I don’t want the system to collapse,” Dudek said in a closed-door meeting last week. He also said that it “would be catastrophic for the people in our country” if DOGE were to make changes at his agency that they made in others. www.propublica.org/article/reco...

🧵 On 23 Apr 2025, NASA released this selection of splendid images, recently taken by #Hubble, for celebrating the space telescope’s 35 years in Earth orbit. Enjoy! ➡️ science.nasa.gov/missions/hub... Image: NASA, ESA, STScI; Image Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI), Alyssa Pagan (STScI) 🔭 🧪 ⚛️
Here is a selection of four recent images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Upper left: Mars, the red planet, with its polar ice caps well visible. Upper right: planetary nebula NGC 2899 with its bipolar structure, shaped by powerful outflows of gas coming from a hot white dwarf. Gaseous pillars point back toward the source of radiation and stellar winds. The vivid colors (red-orange, purple, green) come from glowing hydrogen and oxygen. Lower left: a small section of the Rosette Nebula, a 4-light-year-wide slice, revealing dark hydrogen clouds laced with dust. Lower right: a detailed face-on view of the bluish barred spiral galaxy NGC 5335. It lacks well-defined arms and features a prominent bar stretching across its center.

Bravo cezaevi. Bugünkü alkışlar sana.

other populations that are roughly 1% or under: british people. jewish people. ukrainians. people with schizophrenia. also bipolar. and epilepsy. people living with HIV. people with red hair. people diagnosed with brain cancer. people who own horses. i could go on, but do i need to

Even one of the takes expressing revulsion at the treatment of trans people also says that the administration's policies aren't consequential because they affect a small population. Would anyone say the same about the explicit persecution of an ethnic or religious minority? This is extraordinary.

It’s mind-blowing that, in the year of our Lord 2025, the president has declared that an entire cohort of people simply do not exist. The outsized and outstandingly cruel obsession with transgender Americans – a small, vulnerable minority already targeted with disproportionate violence – is blatant scapegoating, and a serious overreach on the part of the federal government. I can’t say it’s exactly consequential, since so few lives are materially affected (which is kind of my point) but it is a shameful mark on our national conscience.

A year or so ago the bipolar community here contributed to some infographics I put together. I just made some updates to the “Mania for Normies” handout; more feedback is always welcome, these are living docs! I’d love for folks to share it with anyone who could benefit 😃 🙌 thank you carry on
An infographic titled “Stages of Mania in Bipolar I–II” from “one impossible thing at a time” by Luke Steuber. It is divided into five sections, each describing a different stage of mania, accompanied by blue and yellow illustrations.

1. Euthymia (yellow background):
Quote: “Is this happiness? Is my bipolar cured?”

	•	Stable phase called “normal.”
	•	Responsible, focused, confident.
	•	Worries about depression, may delay tasks.
	•	Often diagnosed as cyclothymia.
Illustration: Person holding balanced scales.

2. Hypomania (blue background):
Quote: “Sorry to ghost you! I swear it won’t happen again!”

	•	Easier social interactions, active on social media.
	•	Starts projects like writing a business plan, overspending.
	•	Rapid profile picture changes.
	•	Thoughts speeding up.
	•	Considered the limit of Bipolar II.
Illustration: Person raising a hand with a light bulb above, standing in front of a crowd.

3. Mania (Manic Episode) (yellow background):
Quote: “I’m not manic, listen, I think we can sell this.”

	•	No need to eat, drink, or sleep.
	•	Starts many projects impulsively.
	•	Makes others uncomfortable.
	•	Experiences “time dilation.”
	•	Hypersexual, emotional, dehydrated.
Illustration: Crowned figure standing above a group of smaller figures.

4. Mania (Mixed Episode) (blue background):
Quote: “Maybe if I finish this one last thing I will matter.”

	•	Energetic yet deeply sad.
	•	Risk for substance abuse and self-harm.
	•	Associated with creativity.
	•	Quick but fixated thoughts.
Illustration: Person surrounded by icons of droplets, flames, and hearts, representing intense emotions.

5. Psychosis (Psychotic Episode) (yellow background):
Quote: “No time to discuss mania; bugs in the mattress.”

	•	Psychosis is a state, not a condition.
	•	More common in formal thought disorders.
	•	Most likely in Bipolar I mania.
	•	Important to have a plan; warn emergency services if necessary.
Illustration: Person with question marks over their head and bugs around them.

The barrier to entry for receiving PIP for mental illness is already staggeringly high. It is unfathomable that this government is moving to make people experiencing psychosis, bipolar disorder, severe OCD, depression, personality disorders, PTSD...more financially insecure. To what possible end?

It takes an average of 9.5 years to get a diagnosis of bipolar in the UK. If you want an ADHD assessment in Wales, there’s a 7 year waiting list. 10% of those still waiting for a 2nd contact in adult mental health services have been waiting at least 116 weeks. But tell me again about overdiagnosis
