Although it's not the most visually appealing moth, it's a new addition to the garden. I've looked at a book and believe it's a Zelotherses paleana. Otherwise known as Timothy, for short. Fortunately, the book only had one tortrix that looked like it. #teammoth #mothsmatter

I can goes years without seeing a Bee Hawk-moth, so seeing both species in the space of a few days in Hants has been a real treat. Picture won't win any prizes, but they are not the most cooperative of species. #teammoth

Migrant Lepidoptera (GB & Ireland)

Decent mothing conditions for most of us tonight. The warm air from North Africa will hopefully bring one or two rarities our way, most likely from Dorset to Kent. There could also be dispersal from the near Continent in SE/E England. #teammoth
17:00 today. Warm North African air reaching South-eastern England
Migrant activity most likely between the red lines, although something could turn up further west or east, particularly near Continental dispersal to South-east/Eastern England.

Just four of the many butterflies I saw at @savebutterflies.bsky.social Prestbury Hill reserve yesterday: Marsh Fritillary, Small Heath, Adonis Blue and Duke of Burgundy. Unlike last year, which was dire, this seems to be shaping up to be a bumper butterfly season. #insect #butterfly #stingsnwings
A Marsh Fritillary butterfly rests with its wings outspread. It is a very colourful butterfly, its overwings showing a bright chequered pattern in orange, brown, and yellow. The hair on its body is mainly black, but there are patches of bright orange on its face, shoulders and tail. The ends of its antennae are brown and yellow. Its wingspan is around 35-40mm.
A Small Heath butterfly rests n a grass stalk with its wings folded. The underside of the forewing is mainly orange, with an eyespot at the tip. The hindwing is banded in brown, grey and cream. Its wingspan is around 35mm.
A male Adonis Blue butterfly rests on a seed head, his wings partly folded. His overwings are vivid blue, with white fringing around the edges that's cut through by black lines. His underwings are brownish grey, with black and orange crescent spots. His wingspan is around 3cm. This is the rarest blue butterfly in the UK, found at only a handful of sites.
A Duke of Burgundy butterfly rests on a grass stalk, his wings outspread. He is a rich chocolate brown, with a chequerboard pattern of orangey-yellow markings towards the outside of both his fore and hind wings, and a chequered brown and white edging all around them. When fresh the markings on his wings would have been a deep orange colour, and the hair on his body a mixture of brown and orange. Now he is slightly faded, but he still has a collar of orange hair.
