The deep-sea mining news is grim, but I want to talk about why the deep ocean is so exciting and why we still know very little about how the ecosystems function.
Why don't we know more about large, mobile fauna in the deep sea? It's because we are loud and they are fast.

The Colossal Squid is the largest invertebrate on the planet, that we know of. It weighs half a ton. It is found throughout the Southern Ocean. It was first described a century ago.
And it was only last month that we saw one in its habitat for the first time.

But this is also a huge opportunity. The weird dudes saying we were born too late to explore the earth and too early to explore the planets are lying to you. Almost all of the ocean is still waiting to be discovered.

This makes me so angry. The longnose gar are spawning as are the white bass. Some bow fishers just slaughtered the shit out of them, lined them up neatly and left them to die. At least eat them, they’re delicious. There needs to be actual enforcement of the no wanton waste regs.
