Photo of the top of a Cladonia lichen podetium. The top of the squarish podetium is green with brown apothecia around the edges. Many tiny, worm-like podetia are growing upward from this podetium.

It's that time of year again...when the bird's nest fungi are really taking off!! Now's your best chance to see all their stages as they transition! I think these were exposed a bit too early which makes me wonder at what point it's too early for viable spores to be produced. #FungiFriends #Fungi
A group of birds nest fungi grow on a stem that's surrounded by a massive number of tiny hair covered plants, as found. The nest in the foreground is in focus but on the cusp of not being so. The "egg" spore satchels are still suspended in the goo, technical term there, that they grew up in and protected them. Their cap has been mostly torn off but some remnants remain in the top portion with tiny bits also seen along the rim. Another of the same species but with its cap mostly intact is seen in the middle of the frame but barely out of focus. Its cap is torn making the inside "goo" visible.
At least 26 separate caps/cups/nests seen here, including at least one that's decided to sprout in the cup of possibly its parent or a cousin. The brown cap with a small orange speck in the middle is a successional fungi.

Fly Agarics seen around the neighborhood. So famous they have their own emoji! ๐Ÿ„ Cute, but NOT cute enough to eatโ€”just for looks! (poisonous) #fungifriends
A single mushroom emerges from a layer of pine needles. It has a bright brick red round cap with white splotches, and a white stalk.
Two red capped mushrooms with white splotches and white stalks grow closely next to each othet.
Three red capped mushrooms with white splotches line up in a row, from smallest to biggest, growing out of the soil.

I spy, with my little eye, the abdomen of some lucky creature finding shelter under the cap of this bonnet #Fungi. It never ceases to amaze me each time I find a tiny creature taking advantage of the fungal form. #FungiFriends #Nature
A bonnet fungi with a light brown cap accented with darker stripes that correspond with the gills under the cap. The edge of the cap is a lighter coloration similar to the light grey gills. The stipe appears semi translucent with horizontal markings that make it seem as though it was segmented. The abdomen of a creature is seen sticking out from under the cap as it apparently grips the stipe near where it connects with the cap. No legs are visible. The fungi is growing from the tip of a moss covered dead lower stem of a Douglas fir tree.

Went out to witness the majesty of snow-covered meadows and, hopefully, fungi. It's not that often that we get so much snow here in the Netherlands, so it was worth the wet shoes and cold feet & hands. Here are some fungi I found, undoubtedly shivering as much as I was. #fungifriends
A sawn-off tree stump covered with trametes (turkey tails) or other flat fungi (possibly Plicaturopsis crispa, or crispling, or crimped gill), all covered in snow, making for a wintry scene.
Old flat fungi, almost burgundy red in colour, covering a tree stump from left to right. Possibly old turkey tails or Plicaturopsis crispa (crimped gill/crispling). The ones on top are covered in snow, with some moss peeping through the snow.
Several fungi protruding from a tree stump. They are orange with lighter rims and stacked. The top ones, darker in colour, have some snow covering them. They are likely Plicaturopsis crispa, or crimped gill, or crispling.
Two fungi on a tree trunk, dark chocolatey brown in colour. The left one partly covered in snow, the other wet and shiny. They are probably Fomes fomentarius, or tinder polypores.

This has been an amazing season for mushrooms in my hood (coastal NorCal); both in number and variety. And three of these shots were taken in suburban garden settings! #fungifriends
Photo of a pretty big oyster mushroom with a size 10 shoe for scale. The โ€˜shroom is growing on a fallen log in a wet forest. It is varying shades of tan to white and is surrounded by small green leaves and dark soil.
A large patch (several hundred?) of beige mushrooms growing in an untended front yard. At first glance the caps look like brown leaves but are brighter tan/beige than the dry grass in front
Close in shot of dozens of tiny white bell shaped mushrooms emerging from a bed of brown pine needles and seeds. A nearly-camouflaged brown fungus, looking like shaved chocolate, can be seen dead center
Photo of square grey pavers with several clumps of golden brown mushrooms growing between them.

A semicircular, wavy bracket fungus. Red at the edge, fading to orange and yellow towards the middle, and the middle is green, probably due to algae.

/17 FUNGI This year was the first since my childhood that I spent time in forests during the mushroom season. It was an explorerโ€™s dream, and a joy to learn about fungal networks, fruiting, masting and the great variety of fungi. #photography #fungi #mycology #fungifriends #nature
