Plant ID: getting started – Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland
Let's find out more about the wild plants blooming across Britain and Ireland!
Feed on BlueskyYes! Thank you #WildflowerHour for this week's challenge - #tinyplants are the best! The closer you look, the more there are, and you disappear into their world and see everything at a different scale... hard to pick just four from this week!
Found a #tinyplants for #wildflowerhour in the wild patch in my lawn. Cornsalad with fat finger for scale!
No, they aren't really flowers, but the female reproductive structures of larch, often called larch roses, certainly look like flowers for this week's #treeflowers challenge for #wildflowerhour @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social
Ivy-leaved Toadflax (or Coliseum Ivy, Wandering Sailor or Bastard Navelwort, amongst other names) is having its moment. It’s been brought on early by the drought & heat, so I’m revelling in it’s glory while it lasts #UrbanPlants #WallPlants #PavementPlants #Bangor #Conwy #WildflowerHour
Four different species of #treeflowers from the Rosaceae seen this week - Crab-apple, Pear, Wild Cherry and Midland Hawthorn, their blossom beautifying our local woods and hedges #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social
@cmhmaliani.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social There seems to be a widespread misconception that gorse, Ulex europeas (probably other Ulex species too), produces nectar. At least I have never found any during years of casual observations. Does anyone know of any actual evidence that it ever does?
The woods are waking up! 🌳Why not visit your local patch & see what’s blooming? Share your finds for #wildflowerhour this Sunday 8-9pm using the hashtag #woodlandplants. Happy flower hunting!
An eclectic selection for #WildflowerHour this week. Wild garlic and groundsel chosen for the #Sepals, pink purslane for its looks and cowslip for both. Cowslip from Cambridge, the others from South Devon
I found these violets growing on a local verge. I think they may be Sweet Violet var. sulphurea? Probably a garden escape, but I've not seen this gorgeous colour variety before. Any thoughts @bsbibotany.bsky.social and @wildflowerhour.bsky.social ?
