It's Sunday and the last day of Unexpected week. I had fewer photos of unexpected things picked out than I thought, so I had to rummage through my library to find more. Tomorrow it's back to nature with some tree stumps. #WeeklyTheme #Unexpected
A broken and deformed metal bucket found in the forest. Only a part of the bucket is visible in the photo, and it's partially covered in pine needles. There's embossed text on the bucket saying LYCKEBY 15 LIT. I assume Lyckeby is the manufacturer, named after the place where it was made. 15 LIT refers to the volume, 15 litres.

#BlueBrewBooks This week I read “The Songs of Trees: Stories from Nature’s Great Connectors” by David George Haskell (nonfiction, 2017), kindly recommended to me by Jason @climbtotheclouds.bsky.social. It has to be the greatest piece of natural history writing I’ve ever read. (More in ALT)
Haskell is also the author of “How Flowers Made Our World,” which I gushed over here when it was released several months ago. I feel even more strongly about this earlier, dense, 250-page book, now that I’ve spent the week with it. I have to admit I thought this was going to be a book about the musicality of trees. Though that may be true in the very broadest sense, it is rather a story of the importance of trees in our lives. The magnificent chapter entitled “Cottonwood,” for example, was not only about the tree, though it was indeed that. It was also about race and gender in rural America, about duality, about our forefathers, about city ecology. The chapter entitled “Callery Pear” was also about Manhattan and about the politics and interconnectedness of trees and people in urban areas. And the story is not just about America and its trees — it weaves together trees and peoples from around the world in a wonderful, straightforward yet lyrical style. I could go on, but I hope that you’ll do that instead by picking up a copy for yourselves. Enjoy!
