#HumansofBlueSky A lone woman, a cathedral, somewhere in Northwest Europe. 1970. #photography #classicmono #alone #woman #cathedral #light #EastCoastKin
A lone woman sits quietly at the front of a cathedral’s long arcade of arches and columns. The scene is dimly lit with light from above. The seat to her left glows with the light of the cathedral’s large gothic arched west window.

#UrbanGaze #HumansOfBlueSky #photography #retro Looking up, looking down. Sensoji Temple, Tokyo
Washed-out photo looking straight at the central section of a 5-story Buddhist temple with a broad tile roof above the entrance and showing the red undersides of the upper levels, with ornate wooden framing, all topped by a golden spire. At the base, a man stands stiffly in the middle distance looking up at the temple in front of him; a young man is just entering the frame at the bottom right, striding purpusefully as he holds his phone in one hand and puts his index finger to his lips in thought with the other.

People in Paris perusing the past. I was very tempted by the silly stuffed cat(?). #UrbanGaze #HumansOfBlueSky #ClassicMono #Paris #FleaMarket #antiques #photography #EastCoastKin
For Urban Gaze, Humans of Bluesky and Classic Mono, a black-and-white photograph, wide view of an antique stall on a street in Paris. A long table is filled with antiques and collectibles, including, what looks like a tempting, silly, stuffed cat. On the left two men are walking past, in the centre three gentlemen are having a conversation and on the right, the head of a man looking intently something of interest.

A b&w photograph of a group of people on a beach with the main person having their back to me holding up a lantern ready to go up in the air. There are other people facing me but they're focused on the lantern. In the background is the sea and some cliffs. There is a sad story to this. But it's not mine to tell.

Needed some color after that first B&W picture I ever posted, so here it is. You may guess which country this is, if you feel like it 😄. Otherwise, please don't. #photography #travel #travelphotography #UrbanGaze #HumansofBlueSky #EastCoastKin
A couple of bright colored-scooters gathered in front of a light orange souvenirshop. The shop has an entrance with an overhang with roman pilars and is decorated with orange and white roof tiles. Two (friendly!) guys wearing track jackets are hanging around the scooters. A couple of women are standing in front of the shops window, probably waiting for their men to be done with buying some useless souvenirs like a knife with a handmade wooden handle or a lighter with the flag of the country, which I will NOT reveal, on it (got your hopes up, didn't I?). Although both could be usefull actually, God I really need to stop typing now. Sorry.

Lake Baikal: “The Scream.” I shot with a slow shutter to intensify the emotion. The faster exposures didn’t do it justice. FYI 20% of the world’s accessible fresh water is in this lake. #Photography #HumansOfBlueSky #ColorADay #Baikal #Siberia #IceBathReaction #FrozenMoments #FreezingForFun
The photo captures a dramatic moment: a man is gasping for breath as he hauls himself from a jagged hole cut into 5–6 feet of solid ice on the frozen surface of Lake Baikal. His muscles are tense, veins prominent, and his face contorted in a primal reaction to the shock of subzero water. Drops of icy water fly off his body as he grips the edge of the hole and a striped mat placed on the ice for stability. This is not mere endurance—it’s ritual, tradition, and test of will.
Credit: Gregory Rothman 2014

We had finished up Ice Diving for the day when this was offered. Only a couple people got in. My Russian friends, who did not participate, encouraged me to try it. They said “It feels good afterwards. It’s good for you.” I responded, “it feels good when someone stops punching you in the face.”

Lake Baikal – Sacred, Ancient, and Brutally Beautiful
	Location: Southeastern Siberia
Depth: 1,642 meters (deepest in the world)
Winter Freeze: From January to April, the lake freezes over with ice 1–2 meters thick—so clear in places you can see 40 meters down.
Ecology: Over 80% of its species are endemic, including the Baikal seal (nerpa), the only freshwater seal in the world.
Heritage: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Baikal is sacred to local Indigenous groups and beloved across Russia for its purity and power.

My son at the Old Faithful Geyser of Calistoga. Love his old man pose. #HumansOfBluesky #Photography #California
A little boy in the foreground, right hand on hip, staring at a small geyser shooting water into the sky. In the background, the rolling, oak-studded hills of Sonoma County, California.
