feminism is when you see women as a special, magical non-human animal that is pure and needs to be protected from the realities of the world.

Really important to hear these stories — yet more examples of the negative effects of generative AI. If you care about how tech affects our lives, and how it can be resisted, I really recommend subscribing to Brian’s newsletter. He’s doing fantastic work.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing. These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

The changing forest colors signal black bears entering hyperphagia, building fat for winter hibernation. Learn how these seasonal cycles of feeding and fasting highlight deep connections between ecology, survival, and the landscapes of New England. #AnimalStudies #SelfDirectedLearning

‘Animals don't behave like men,' he said. 'If they have to fight, they fight; and if they have to kill they kill. But they don't sit down and set their wits to work to devise ways of spoiling other creatures' lives and hurting them. They have dignity and animality.’ #RichardAdams #WatershipDown

This is worth reading and it's clear that austerity has a lot to do with the resurgence of the far right. But there is arrant stupidity too e.g. Keir Starmer + asylum seekers being blamed for the state of the NHS, rather than 14 years of Tory government! www.theguardian.com/comme….

Some in Whitehall were aggressive, some openly racist – but more still felt this far-right gathering was the only place they could be heard, says Guardian journalist Helen Pidd

I'm getting my updated vaccine next week. There is so much denial in the US about this situation! Thanks to Mike Hoerger PhD. #COVID #publichealth #vaccine
This map of the US shows COVID levels per state, based on CDC wastewater data and levels, as of 15 September. There are many states in the very high or high category. My own state of VA is high. Included in the very high category are FL, TX, CA, NC, SC, CT and quite a few others.

@petervale.bsky.social & I are looking for scholars interested in contributing to an upcoming workshop/special issue on aeromobility and 20th science & tech. How aircraft changed scientific practice, use in experiments, air travel as foundation for academic collaboration, etc. Please share!

saw on walk to brooklyn college, a poster of a found cat that looks like a Gerhard Richter
dark grey and white cat, semi profile, grey light green background, moulding on the bottom, wooden floor, only the reflection of the cat's feet is wrong. otherwise, very Richter.

"The animal is not beneath us, but beside us; its path through time runs parallel to ours, only differing in the music by which it moves." - Eliseo Reclus Going to post one of these every day as a reminder. More at bit.ly/world-revisited #nature #biodiversity #veganism #animalethics
Did you know scientific studies show animals demonstrate behaviors associated with consciousness, planning, and emotional response?

Eeva Nikkilän eläinhistoriatekstissä kiinnostavalta tuntuvat etenkin 1920-luvun kriittiset kommentit uusista suursikaloista. Ne kuulostavat kovin samankaltaisilta kuin saman aikakauden kritiikki turkiseläinten häkkeihin siirtoa kohtaan @eevanik.bsky.social www.tieteessatapahtuu.fi/….

Hivemind is the name we give the general intellect. But what about the collective libido? For this, I propose “hiveloins.”

No shortage of things to be angry about, but today I've selected all the pressure and stress around homework for kids in primary school (and I'm not talking Year 6). It's utterly ridiculous and unnecessary.

Prepping for new biosocieties module, including session on bodies, gender, sexuality. Beyond Roughgarden & Baghemihl, looking for more recent readings covering this shift? Within biology or #sts #histSTM #envHums all welcome!

... Is it though? Nearly everywhere we look we find non-hetero relations. Absence of anything queer would be the unexpected outcome!
